2020 Ducru-Beaucaillou 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

VM96-98
The en primeur release of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou today marks nearly twenty flourishing years of expertise and excellence under the stewardship of Bruno Borie, and a 2020 vintage of remarkable... purity and elegance. Supple and concentrated, it is somewhat lighter on its feet than the 2019 yet possesses a length, refinement and grace reaffirming why Ducru-Beaucaillou, has remained over these twenty years such an attractive proposition for collectors. Though not all critics were able to sample the 2020, plaudits from the The Wine Advocate suggest a similar attraction with 95-97 points awarded. Collectors will also note this year’s special label design to mark this estate’s tercentenary vintage, which Borie describes as ‘an event in itself’ and one ‘capturing the brilliance, perspectives and energy of the 2020 vintage’.

2020 Alter Ego, Margaux 6x75cl

DE93JR17+
This exuberant, fruit-driven delight is a near 50/50% assemblage of cabernet sauvignon and merlot with a dash of petit verdot and shows great purity with a structure slightly exceeding those of previous vintages. Therefore, a perfect drinking claret and one quite comfortable spending some good years in your cellar.

"This has the tight tannins of the vintage with damson and an edge of bitter dark chocolate, but it is a success all the same - confident, succulent, elegant and classic." 93 pts., Jane Anson, www.decanter.com

2020 Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

DE95
As Chateau Talbot’s third vintage under the direction of Jean-Michel Laporte (ex-La Conseillante) overlapped a trio of consecutive great years in Bordeaux, there was every indication that his 2020... would create as much anticipation as his 18’s and 19’s. That expectation was fully justified with the refinement and elegance this St Julien gem continues show. A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, the vintage shows a floral and fruit spectrum on the nose, with blackcurrant, berry and cassis; lifted, concentrated and fresh, its palate is expansive with a delicious lick of minerality, one whose elegance is matched only by a terrific length.

“…A red that has established an enviable reputation in just three vintages, this sings of its site on the corner of the Helderberg. Partnering Cabernet Franc with 26% Merlot and 9% Cabernet... Sauvignon, it's another triumph from Schalk-Willem Joubert. Elegant, detailed and refreshing, it's a wine that doesn't seem to be trying too hard, with graphite, fynbos and sea breeze aromas, subtle 30% new wood and a layered palate of fresh herbs, cassis and black cherry.” 97 pts., Tim Atkin MW

2020 Domaine Albert Bichot (Long-Depaquit), Chablis Grand Cru, Moutonne 6x75cl

JM93-96JR17.5+
*ON ALLOCATION - £570 per case of 6 bottles IB* Domaine Long-Depaquit can be traced back to 1791 when Jean Depaquit and his brother Simon moved to Chablis. They purchased vineyards and developed... their domaine into one of the most renowned producers of Chablis today. Now owned by Albert Bichot in Beaune, Domaine Long-Depaquit offers an impressive range of Premier and Grand Crus. A sustainable approach, limited yields and skilful winemaking creates incredibly invigorating and mineral-edged wines. ‘La Moutonne’, a monopole in the heart of the Grand Cru vineyards, between Vaudésir and Les Preuses is one of their most celebrated cuvées, known for its incredible precision, elegance and staying power. Whichever cuvée you choose, these are delicious, mineral rich Chardonnays of the highest order. Opening the proceedings at a Bichot tasting in London, the 2020 La Moutonne quite simply blew us away. Crushed oyster shell and citrus on the nose, followed on the palate by a superb energy with an exquisite texture. Laser-like, yet with excellent weight and power on the long finish, this is very, very special.

2020 Chateau Quintus, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

DE93
"Exuberant and confident, with powerful damson and black cherry fruit flavours on the nose. Chocolate and liquorice run through the palate from beginning to end, and this is full of signature... St-Emilion glamour. It has a round and supple texture through the mid palate, but the alcohol hides some of the limestone nuance at this point - it will no doubt emerge more clearly with 8 to 10 years in bottle." Drink 2029-2044. 93 pts., Jane Anson, decanter.com

"This is excellent, really the most gorgeous balance of power, with dark blueberry juicy fruits and lots of liquorice. Excellent balance and a seductive overall frame. Great stuff - the tannins are pretty fierce though, needs time, will reward ageing." 94 pts., Jane Anson, decanter.com

2020 Chateau Berliquet Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM88-90
"The 2020 Berliquet has an open, quite generous bouquet of high-toned, quite floral aromas (iris and violet petals) mixed with Dorset plum, bilberry and wild strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied... with a medicinal, menthol-tinged opening, ripe and again, generous. The candied finish just needs to show a little more restraint. Fine, but it will have to manifest more elegance and composure by the time of bottling. Perhaps it was unfair to pour this against the 2020 Canon, also owned by the Wertheimer family, but it highlighted the difference between their respective terroirs." 88-90 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2020 Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru, Les Millandes 6x75cl

JM91-94JR16
This wine comes from a great vineyard scattered with small stones and abutting the grand cru of Mazis-Chambertin. It creates a very elegant and dynamic wine with delicious layers of morello cherry and fresh herbs that are tempered by a delightful freshness and complexity. A wonderful example to be savoured over the next 10 to 15 years.

2020 Philippe Livera (Tilleuls), Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru 6x75cl

*ON ALLOCATION - £1150 per case of 6 bottles IB* A new find for Mr.Wheeler in the 2019 vintage and one we are pleased to follow since then; Domaine Livera is widely considered the “next Burgundian... star” tellingly both by consumers of their exceptional wines together with their winemaking contemporaries. The Livera family have been settled on the Domaine for almost 100 years, but Damien, who has been in charge for 13 years now, has taken the wines to a different level altogether. His style is one of purity, precision of fruit and impressive depth, quite reminiscent of the wines produced by Arnaud Mortet (who is a close friend and advisor). This is an up-and-coming address and very much one to watch. Such a complete wine the Domaine Livera Chapelle-Chambertin. Mind-blowingly powerful yet ever so precise, seamless harmony even at this early stage, and a finish that unfurls layer upon layer of flavour: notes of violets and raspberry, followed by cherry then more savoury hints of winter spice and an almost umami finish. Impossibly delicious.

2020 Domaine Joseph Voillot, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Epenots 6x75cl

VM91-93
Domaine Joseph Voillot holds 10 hectares of vineyards spanning the communes of Volnay and Pommard. Jean Pierre Charlot’s wines offer understatement and elegance, and in 2020 they have also... delivered fruit richness and an intensity rarely captured in Volnay and Pommard. These wines are impossible to ignore, showing modern classicism whilst perfectly expressing the wine’s unique terroirs. These are wines which speak so eloquently of their individual sites and are the essence of pinot noir. For buyers keen to experience the purity and poise of Volnay and Pommard in a great vintage, look no further than Domaine Joseph Voillot.

"The 2020 Volnay Les Mitans 1er Cru has a generous bouquet with red cherries, blackcurrant and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, quite spicy with white pepper and clove notes towards the finish. Very fine, but it needs time." 90-92 pts., Neal Martin, vinous.com

"100% whole bunch vinification. Deep purple black. This is immensely more powerful on the nose. Spicy dark fruit, but please note not cooked at all and retaining a fresh vigour on the palate. Dark... raspberry, with correct tannins and good acidity, plus the hoped for persistence. Completely different in style to Goulots – probably just as good but my personal preference is for the additional finesse of Goulots. Concentrated wine for the longer term, very well made." 91-94 pts., Jasper Morris MW, insideburgundy.com

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 La Lagune strides confidently out of the glass with bold, fantastically pure black fruit notes of crushed black plums, ripe blackcurrants and juicy blackberries,... plus hints of tar, dried Provence herbs, star anise and smoked meats, with a hint of black truffles. "So full of deeply-drawn berry fruit, fresh and juicy with touches of liquorice bud and rosemary, thirst quenching and yet thirst inducing in that amazing way that limestone can both refresh and make... you thirst for more at the same time. An excellent Moulin St Georges, and such a step up from the more sandy soils that you find at Fonbel and the two Simard estates in this year's range of Vauthier-owned wines that this alone can help you understand how to navigate 2020." 94 pts., Jane Anson, decanter.com

2020 Domaine du Tunnel, Saint-Joseph 6x75cl

An enticing expression of this more 'rustic' of appellations, still starting with a beautifully refined nose of black pepper, spice, bay leaf and mineral notes. On the palate, invigorating streaks of... creamy minerality; juicy black bitter/sweet olive fruit and liquorice that is clean, grippy and lingering. It promises supreme drinking pleasure in 5-7 years' time.

2020 Philippe Livera (Tilleuls), Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Evocelles 6x75cl

Opened, approachable and again with a core of red fruit, suggesting a relatively early picking for preserving freshness and poise. Contiguous with the 1er Crus, it is widely thought that Evocelles... was not included in that classification only because most of the vineyard is in Brochon rather than Gevrey. Certainly the complexity and mineral finish point to a terroir of some class, and the relatively high altitude serves it well in this warm vintage. Well worth considering as a great-value option to the premiers crus. (Mr.Wheeler tasting note)

2020 Claudie Jobard, Pommard Premier Cru, Les Charmots 12x75cl

The wines of Pommard are renowned for their structured and powerful cuvées and this example is no disappointment. A nose of fragrant cherry precedes an intense framed mouthful of deep berry fruit... and blackcurrants, with great balancing acidity and length. It is of course very young, yet is already showing signs that with time this will be absolutely delicious.

The very popular second wine from famous Pauillac producer Château Pichon Lalande. The 2020 vintage is made from 47% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, offering plenty of rich, warm... dark fruit led by fresh, leafy blackberry on the nose with light menthol nuances and graphite minerality on the palate. Beautifully structured, long, clean, generous. In a word, delicious; in two, very impressive.
