2021 Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Champonnet 6x75cl

JM90-93JR16.5+
Juicy black cherry flecked with black pepper and clove follow the seductive, open aromatics that a whole-bunch fermentation approach provides. Intensely flavoured, firmly structured, finishing long and savoury. Great ageing potential in the 2021. (Mr.Wheeler tasting note)

2021 Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes 6x75cl

JR16.5+
Sourced from 65-year-old vines, minty notes and a hint of liquorice open up this classic expression of Gevrey in which whole-bunch vinification give its seductive aromatics further lift. The oak... regime is delightfully modest, allowing a greater depth to the wine's dark, cherry-fruit core that is articulated by delicate but firm tannins. An exceptional pinot. 2019 Sylvie Esmonin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieillles Vignes 6x75cl

VM89-91
Holding fast to Gevrey's famous structural character, Sylvie's village Gevrey-Chambertin takes on bolder dimensions this year. Alongside the classic notions of summer pudding, raspberry compote and... cranberry aromatics come more intense notions of black cherry and spiced plum. There is exotic spice, cinnamon and all-spice and even a hint of mocca, too. Generous and giving with succulent red berry flavours, there is exquisite freshness and structure which help foil this village wine par excellence.

2018 Sylvie Esmonin, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieillles Vignes 6x75cl

"The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes is matured in 50% new oak with 60% whole-bunch fruit. I actually like the definition on the nose, which is intense but shows decent clarity, offering... copious dark cherries, marmalade and blueberry aromas. The fresh palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, delivering dark cherry and black currant fruit laced with blood orange and white pepper and coming across quite citric on the finish. Good potential."90-92, Neal Martin,

2018 Sylvie Esmonin, Gevrey-Chambertin 6x75cl

"The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Village, matured in 40% new oak with 40% whole bunch, has an intense bouquet of black cherries, iodine and blueberry aromas that burst from the glass. The intense palate... is medium-bodied with supple tannins, blood-orange-infused red fruit and a touch of pain d’épices and black pepper toward the finish. Fine." 90-92, Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2018 Philippe Livera (Tilleuls), Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Evocelles 1x300cl

From a vineyard high up the slope on the northern side of Gevrey-Chambertin, this is a very smart and assured wine with real presence and power. The southern exposition of the site brings striking... ripeness and intensity. Under the surface there is minerality and elegance, whilst the initial impression is expressive black fruits with a touch of liquorice. Definitely 1er Cru quality.

2021 Philippe Livera (Tilleuls), Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos Village 6x75cl

JR16+
Darker, more savoury, explosive and spicy, much more muscular and structured than the previous cuvées - we are getting into 1er Cru territory here yet retaining the precision and purity of fruit cosseted in fleshy, juicy texture that is, in my opinion, the hallmark of the estate. 2021 Philippe Livera (Tilleuls), Gevrey-Chambertin, Les Evocelles 6x75cl

This year Les Evocelles is particularly mineral, linear and precise, and while it continues in the very moreish juicy style of the Domaine there is excellent ripeness and power, and oodles of the Gevrey liquorice notes to accompany the ripe cherries. So delicious, and ambitious, too. (Mr.Wheeler tasting note)

2020 Philippe Livera (Tilleuls), Gevrey-Chambertin, Clos Village 6x75cl

A new find for Mr.Wheeler in the 2019 vintage and one we are pleased to follow since then; Domaine Livera is widely considered the “next Burgundian star” tellingly both by consumers of their... exceptional wines together with their winemaking contemporaries. The Livera family have been settled on the Domaine for almost 100 years, but Damien, who has been in charge for 13 years now, has taken the wines to a different level altogether. His style is one of purity, precision of fruit and impressive depth, quite reminiscent of the wines produced by Arnaud Mortet (who is a close friend and advisor). This is an up-and-coming address and very much one to watch. At the very centre of the Gevrey commune is Le Clos Village, a vineyard that enjoyed a particularly successful cuvée in 2020. In Philippe's hands, it is full of explosive energy with a depth of flavour to rival that of the better premiers crus, and a Gevrey easily meeting the expectations of a great village cuvée. And then some. Length is particularly impressive here, with real ambition and structure to see it safely through most of its second decade.

This is an up-and-coming address and very much one to watch. Opened, approachable and again with a core of red fruit, suggesting a relatively early picking for preserving freshness and poise. Contiguous with the 1er Crus, it is widely thought that Evocelles was not included in that classification only because most of the vineyard is in Brochon rather than Gevrey. Certainly the complexity and mineral finish point to a terroir of some class, and the relatively high altitude serves it well in this warm vintage. Well worth considering as a great-value option to the premiers crus.

2021 Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Petite Chapelle 6x75cl

"The four-hectare Petite Chapelle vineyard is one of the easternmost Premier Crus in Gevrey-Chambertin and lies just below the Chapelle-Chambertin grand cru itself. We loved this wine when we tasted... it at the Domaine in November. It has a very floral nose with hints of gentle and seductive oak, and wonderful sprightly acidity. The cherry and stone fruit palate has a spicy and powerful underbelly, and its saline minerality rounds things off to provide truly pleasurable experience." (Mr.Wheeler tasting note)

2021 Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, Clos Prieur 6x75cl

"Delicate and refined, it provides the yin to the yang of its more robust neighbour, Petite Chapelle, giving us once again an open and aromatic style of Gevrey. There is a great weight of fruit with... plenty of tension and underlying power, but it is overlaid with a real elegance and subtly that sets it apart from its more muscular compatriots. Delightful." 2019 Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru, La Perriere 6x75cl

JM90-93
Darker fruit, 50% whole bunch, one third new wood which is standard for the Heresztyn 1ers crus. More crimson than purple. Fine even red purple, a little spice at the back, maybe a touch meaty too, good weight a medium bodied Gevrey with some persistence.

"Delicious gorgeous purple. 100% whole bunch but smothered by the fruit. A balanced headiness if you like, and beautifully attractive. The stems add a little structure, almost some muscle to the back, which I think is valuable in these richer years." 92-95 pts., Jasper Morris MW

2021 Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes 6x75cl

"The care and effort that goes into assembling this village Gevrey is second to none. Wines from ten or more small parcels are carefully woven together, with each complimenting the other. Light stony... soils bring a subtle elegance, body and robustness comes from a selection of clay-based vines and complexity and fine structure from fruit taken from land abutting the grands crus. This year is again masterful displaying a powerful and robust ripe cherry nose that unfolds in the mouth to give a spicy elegant expression of pure pinot fruit. The tannic ramparts bode well for excellent medium-term ageing, and all together this is genuinely a true pleasure." (Mr.Wheeler tasting note)

2020 Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin, Vieilles Vignes 12x75cl

JM90-92JR16.5
A blend of grapes from four vineyards in the appellation where the vines are between 60 and 90 years old. This is wonderfully aromatic with whiffs of strawberry and brambles but also having a distinct discretion and subtlety that begs further ageing. Gentle hints of 30% new oak and a lovely tannic structure frames a truly excellent wine.

This wine comes from a great vineyard scattered with small stones and abutting the grand cru of Mazis-Chambertin. It creates a very elegant and dynamic wine with delicious layers of morello cherry and fresh herbs that are tempered by a delightful freshness and complexity. A wonderful example to be savoured over the next 10 to 15 years.
