2020 Domaine Morey Coffinet, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, La Romanee 6x75cl

We discovered the wines of this Chassagne-Montrachet rising star (established in its current form "only" 30 years ago, although the family cellars date from the 16th century) for the first time in... 2020, and although we were immediately impressed by the portfolio of great vineyards the Morey family cultivate, it was upon tasting the wines with Thibault Morey that we fell in love with them. The estate is run according to biodynamic principles throughout. Thibault is one of the new generation of winemakers who, through precise, rigorous work and an open mind not only to traditional and modern techniques but also to different expressions of the Burgundy terroirs, produce truly exciting wines. These are wines that combine richness and power with complexity and elegance effortlessly, and they come highly recommended. Ripe and intense, this immediately shows the fabulous opulence La Romanée is famous for. On the palate emerges impressive structure; add length and a level of complexity to rival many a Grand Cru, and you have a 1er Cru that bridges the gap with Chassagne’s most revered vineyards.

With a superb intensity of citrus fruit dominating its core, this village cuvée shows particularly impressive balance and body: round, rich, long and a gorgeously seductive fruit profile that finishes very cleanly and in great freshness. This lieu-dit greatly impressed us last year; in 2020, Thibault has very much upped the ante.

2020 Domaine Morey Coffinet, Chassagne-Montrachet, Les Chaumees 6x75cl

For a Villages Chassagne, Thibault's Chaumes displays a lovely depth of fruit; on the mid-palate we are greeted with ripe, juicy black cherry, yet there is an excellent energy and move toward fresher flavours on the finish. The fine, gently firm and fruit-coated tannin structure makes for a wine that will drink beautifully from 3 years in bottle all the way to 8 years. Another excellent example of the consistency from this Domaine.

2019 Domaine Jacques Carillon, Chassagne-Montrachet 12x75cl

"The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Village has more intensity on the nose compared to the Puligny Village, greater depth and more personality. The palate has a lovely balanced with peach skin and ginger notes, not long, but there is a sense of energy and weight here. A classy Chassagne." Neal Martin, vinous.com

2020 Jean-Marc Pillot, Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru, Les Chenevottes 6x75cl

A truly brilliant winemaking force and winemaker very dear to the heart of Mr.Wheeler; Domaine Jean-Marc Pillot is one of the very best sources of fine Burgundy. Whilst his reds clearly demonstrate... why Chassagne first established its reputation as a red wine commune, Jean-Marc’s whites are seductive and richly-textured with superb precision, opened aromatics and flawless balance. From modest Santenay and St Romain to the exalted Chevalier-Montrachet, there is also something to suit all budgets – only one thing is certain: we all need one (or three) of Jean-Marc’s wines in our Burgundy selection. From very old vines located just above le Montrachet, the position and low yield harvest promise excellence. This Chenevottes does not disappoint as it is once again a massive, concentrated wine with ripe toasty citrus fruit and an underlying vibrancy and precision that makes for gratifying drinking now and several years of graceful ageing.
