2020 Hubert Lamy, Bourgogne, Chataigners 6x75cl

Olivier Lamy runs what is widely considered the finest estate in Saint-Aubin, and indeed one of the finest in the Côte d'Or. The wines here frequently put to shame Puligny or Chassagne at twice the... price. Clearly one of Burgundy’s greatest talents, Olivier’s overriding pursuit of excellence in the vineyard, and of purity and definition in each and every cuvée yields wines of scintillating freshness, brilliant terroir expression and superb age worthiness. A Domaine to follow year in, year out, and in scintillating form once again. An ambitious Bourgogne Blanc that represents the perfect introduction to this universally lauded producer, Chataigniers is impressive for its textural interest, high-tones aromatics and precise, lime and seashell-driven finish. A wine of real class and complexity, even for its relatively modest appellation.

2020 Domaine Fernand Lecheneaut, Bourgogne, Hautes Cotes de Nuits Rouge 12x75cl

Offered by Mr.Wheeler for only the third vintage and one of the most exciting recent additions to our portfolio, Philippe and Vincent Lécheneaut’s ten-hectare estate in Nuits-St-Georges was... created by their father, Fernand Lécheneaut in the 1980s. An extensive range of the finest villages of the Côte de Nuits is produced here; we have picked what we think are the best in 2020 - perfect expressions of pinot noir – rich, sumptuous and elegant, these are modern wines made with minimum intervention that combine purity of fruit with stunning terroir expression. Hautes-Côtes de Nuits have been particularly delicious in the past few, warm, vintages. This example from Léchéneaut is gorgeously moreish and juicy, with excellent ripeness and that spine of acidity that can be expected from vineyards higher up in altitude. Dark cherry fruit and fine-grained tannins combine beautifully here.

However keen you'll be to open a bottle upon arrival, it will continue to provide great drinking pleasure well into the coming decade.

2019 Joseph Roty, Bourgogne, Pressoniers Rouge 6x75cl

VM89-91
"The 2019 Bourgogne Pressonnier is cohesive on the nose of blackberry, boysenberry jam and light violet aromas unfurling with time. Silky-smooth on the entry (you might well mistake this for a Vosne-Romanée), building nicely in the mouth and showing good salinity on the finish." 89-91 pts, Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2020 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet, Bourgogne, Hautes Cotes de Nuits 6x75cl

VM86
The 2020 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Rouge has a light cranberry and wild strawberry scented bouquet, quite vivacious with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, quite tart with a light finish that just needs a little more grip.

2020 Thibault Liger-Belair, Bourgogne, Grands Chaillots 6x75cl

VM87-89
A mix of fruit from Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny, now with Hautes-Côtes fruit to impart freshness, the 2020 Bourgogne Grand Chaillots has a slightly earthy, ash-tinged bouquet that... takes time to unfold. The palate is medium-bodied with tart red fruit, touch of marmalade and quince with a fresh but not long finish. Fine. Neal Martin, Vinous

2020 Sylvie Esmonin, Bourgogne, Cuvee Sylvie 6x75cl

VM85-87
Located in the old part of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, at the foot of the legendary Clos Saint Jacques vineyard, since 1988 the scrupulous Sylvie cultivates 7 ha under her own name. Her deep... knowledge of the vines and meticulous vinification techniques result in wines of great maturity and intensity, capable of great ageing potential. As you'd expect, these wines are in very high demand and Mr.Wheeler are delighted to be offering a selection of Sylvie’s wines for the third vintage in a row. We urge you to snap up a case or two of these sensational wines, whilst you can. Sylvie delivers a fine Bourgogne Rouge in 2020 - for the first time the cuvée includes some Morey-St-Denis fruit, and it shows in the lightly spicy edge that lifts up the core of raspberry coulis with hints of black cherry. Early picking has once again given the spine of acidity making this so moreish. It will age well mid-term - but only if you manage to resist its youthful charm.

2020 Benjamin Leroux, Bourgogne, Rouge 6x75cl

VM84-86
Benjamin has been a good friend of ours since his days at Comte Armand, and his powerful, impressive winemaking style shines through in 2020 where concentration meets with backbone and guile in the... Volnay commune. He remembers his first ever visit to the UK back in 1999 where he spent some time staying with Richard Wheeler (Johnny's father, sadly passed away last year), memorable not least for the friendly dispute regarding the relative merits of local Mersea native Oysters versus their French counterparts! Benjamin’s Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans reflects the greatest attributes of this excellent vintage. Density, richness and structure are all to the fore in a cuvée which gets better with every passing vintage. As Bourgogne Rouge goes, the underlying quality in this one has it already scaling the appellation ladder. Expertly selected pepper-potting of different sites from across the Hautes Côtes and Côte de Beaune, together with village wines from Pommard and further afield, provides Benjamin with the palate on which to create this outstanding introduction to his range. Ripe, heady and full of immediately accessible crunchy strawberry and violet fruit, the very soft tannins and a delightful freshness hold it all together. Smiles all 'round - unmissable!

2020 Dominique Lafon, Bourgogne, Blanc 12x75cl

Already responsible for some of the very finest white wines in the world at his family Domaine in Meursault, and for some of the best value the world of wine has to offer in their Maconnais outfit;... Dominique Lafon has also been making his own wines for 11 years now, from vineyards he either owns or manages. The Dominique Lafon wines, produced at the Château de Bligny winery, are superb, showing the value of Dominique’s talent, experience and meticulous attention to detail. Simply, these are wines produced by one of the worlds greatest vinous talents. This blend of fruit from powerful Meursault and lifted, highly toned Puligny has been a firm favourite here in recent years. A classy Côte d'Or white crafted by one of the most celebrated names in the region, and at a sensationally attractive price point. Here’s a wine of stunning value -- one not to be missed.

2020 Benjamin Leroux, Bourgogne, Blanc 6x75cl

Benjamin’s Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans reflects the greatest attributes of this excellent vintage. Density, richness and structure are all to the fore in a cuvée which gets better with every passing vintage. In this cuvée, Benjamin masterfully blends fruit from mostly Meursault, with some higher altitude chardonnay from the hills above Beaune which adds precision and finesse to this Bourgogne Blanc of unbeatable value. Large, old oak fermenting vessels and lees ageing help keep this wine remarkably fresh and elegant.

2020 Boyer Martenot, Bourgogne, Blanc 12x75cl

A delightful racing acidity complements the buttery minerality this wine exudes - and belies its appellation. There are hints of gunflint and lemon that add further depth, and it is truly a wine that will give great everyday pleasure for many years to come.

2020 Patrick Javillier, Bourgogne, Forgets Blanc 12x75cl

In contrast to its sister “Oligocène”, Les Forgets comes from vines grown on clay soils – and this difference in terroir is very clear. There is more immediate richness to the fruit, but it... still retains the laser-like precision and butterscotch notes that make Javillier’s wines so enticing. A tasting of the 2019 vintage whilst at the property in November showed what another year in bottle can do – it is simply delicious. The 2020 is undoubtedly one to enjoy when it arrives, but there will certainly be no rush.

2020 Philippe Livera (Tilleuls), Bourgogne, Pinot Noir 6x75cl

A new find for Mr.Wheeler in the 2019 vintage and one we are pleased to follow since then; Domaine Livera is widely considered the “next Burgundian star” tellingly both by consumers of their... exceptional wines together with their winemaking contemporaries. The Livera family have been settled on the Domaine for almost 100 years, but Damien, who has been in charge for 13 years now, has taken the wines to a different level altogether. His style is one of purity, precision of fruit and impressive depth, quite reminiscent of the wines produced by Arnaud Mortet (who is a close friend and advisor). This is an up-and-coming address and very much one to watch. Simply outstanding this year; so pretty, floral with a background of juicy black fruit that is gorgeously textured; joyful, sophisticated and poised on the finish. A very, very fine Bourgogne rouge from vines across Gevrey-Chambertin.

2020 Domaine Morey Coffinet, Bourgogne, Blanc 12x75cl

We discovered the wines of this Chassagne-Montrachet rising star (established in its current form "only" 30 years ago, although the family cellars date from the 16th century) for the first time in... 2020, and although we were immediately impressed by the portfolio of great vineyards the Morey family cultivate, it was upon tasting the wines with Thibault Morey that we fell in love with them. The estate is run according to biodynamic principles throughout. Thibault is one of the new generation of winemakers who, through precise, rigorous work and an open mind not only to traditional and modern techniques but also to different expressions of the Burgundy terroirs, produce truly exciting wines. These are wines that combine richness and power with complexity and elegance effortlessly, and they come highly recommended. Very intensely citrussy yet with an elegant, pithy texture and a dry, mineral finish. This is a very serious Bourgogne Blanc that will age well for 3 to 5 years, developing more savoury complexity and length.

2020 Domaine Rossignol Trapet, Bourgogne, Rouge 12x75cl

Really bright ruby in appearance and showing notes of cherries and violets. It is a lovely harmonious wine already and shows great ripeness and expression that punches well above the weight of its modest appellation. It will be spot on for drinking when it arrives, but enjoyable for a good few years after that.
