2020 le Clos du Caillou, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Les Quartz 6x75cl
JR17
"Deepest colour of the four Clos du Caillou cuvées (plenty of Syrah). The aromatics are again restrained but there’s an attractive pitch of fruit and a spicy note that grows with aeration. Rich... and sweet, the fruit really concentrated on the palate. Tannins firm but very fine and completely interwoven with the fruit. Another for ageing." 17 pts., www.jancisrobinson.com

Cornas in a most refined and invigorating style. Serious polish and elegance here from an appellation more typically known for its rustic edge. Leafy, sweet & spicy black fruit on the nose with... earthy, mineral tones. On the palate, lovely interplay of sweet black olive and bitter tapenade flavours. Good grip; supremely precise, elegant, long finish. Quite superb. (Mr.Wheeler tasting note)

“Mostly sourced from les Murets, the 2020 Hermitage La Maison Bleue is a solid effort, with appealing notes of blackberries, raspberries and espresso on the nose. It's full-bodied and rich, yet... streamlined and focused, with savory tones of black olives appearing on the softly dusty finish. It should drink well young, yet age well for more than a decade.” 92-94 pts, Joe Czerwinski, www.robertparker.com, (Drink 2023-2035)

"This is really packed, offering dense waves of cassis, plum compote and blackberry reduction flavors that stay well-defined as they rumble through, with ample cast iron, sweet tapenade, lavender and... bay leaf accents. There's loads of grip on the back end, but it's well-integrated, so just let this unwind in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2038." 95 pts., James Molesworth, winespectator.com

“Leather and spiced notes, pure with good fresh vivacity on the nose. The palate is ripe and seductive, layered with forest fruits, dark spiced figs. Attractive refreshing acidity, red fruits and a... wild garrigue savoury Mourvèdre note – the tannins are supple and silky – dark forest-fruits finish, which is broad, ample and opulent but always with a finesse of tannins and a savoury liquorice mineral note.” 18 pts., Alistair Cooper MW, jancisrobinson.com

"A superb Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Maison Bleue seamlessly blends cherries and cassis into a purple mashup of fruit carried on rich, velvety waves of texture. Full-bodied and intense, it... finishes complex and savory, adding notes of olive, clove and cedar on the long, luxurious finish. Already approachable, it should drink well through 2040." 95 pts., Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com

"Shimmering ruby. Expressive, spice-accented red and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of olive, espresso and candied flowers. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering gently sweet... cherry and cassis flavors that deepen through the back half. Finishes very long, spicy and smooth, with even tannins lending final grip." 92-94 pts., Josh Raynolds, vinous.com

Ampuis-based Jasmin has the advantage of choosing from 12 different plots for blending this exceptional Cote-Rotie (95% syrah, 5% viognier) which he ages for 18 months. His 'Giroflarie' is... considered by many to be the most 'Burgundian' of cuvées in the appellation, drinking quite deliciously in its youth yet also packing the stuff for a good 20 years of graceful ageing.

"Graphite, plum and blackberry aromas. Beautifully silky, this has a good sense of fluidity but also remarkable intensity and concentration. Energetic and driven, with deep fruit and sweet tannin,... there's a mineral straightness that helps to temper that ripe fruit and ripe tannin. The alcohol is quite raised but not unbalanced; this is a cut above most Crozes-Hermitages, more serious in style and texture." 94 pts., Matt Walls, www.decanter.com

"A classic Côte Rôtie, the 2013 Côte Rôtie Promesse checks in as a blend of 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier, completely destemmed, and spent 14 months in one-year-old barrels before bottling. While... there’s only 200 cases or so of the top La Comtesse en Côte Blonde, there’s over a thousand cases of this beauty, so it should be easier to find. Offering textbook black raspberry, violets, bay leaf and raspberry notes, it hits the palate with medium-bodied richness, fine tannin and a sexy, forward, elegant and already hard to resist profile. I’d happily drink it anytime over the coming decade." 90 points, The Wine Advocate

Another example of the new and refined direction in which Tunnel take Cornas. No longer the rusticity that had been typically associated with the appellation; rather, an enticingly elegant, polished... nose of black cherry and liquorice; an ultra silkiness on the palate, grippy, dense, dark black fruit and flavours of olive tapenade and corresponding sweet spice. Fresh, clean, powerful length. From 80-100-year-old vines.

An enticing expression of this more 'rustic' of appellations, still starting with a beautifully refined nose of black pepper, spice, bay leaf and mineral notes. On the palate, invigorating streaks of... creamy minerality; juicy black bitter/sweet olive fruit and liquorice that is clean, grippy and lingering. It promises supreme drinking pleasure in 5-7 years' time.

Stéphane Robert will typically make only 2 barrels of La Chanson vineyard in a vintage. 100% viognier, that is vinified as is his St Péray to obtain a similar level of invigorating freshness. and... aged for 8 months. Pale yellow, with a gorgeous nose of apricot and white flowers that leads to an aromatic, expansive palate redolent of stone fruit, dried herbs, almonds and white honey. A fantastic foodie alternative to white burgundy.

This has always been one of our favourite wines from the Tunnel range – a real tour de force, and a great expression of the Roussanne grape. Perfumed and aromatic, with a little barrel-ageing... adding some toast and exotic spice. Rich and luscious, with rounded peach and pear fruit, but finishing with a mouth-watering citrus freshness. A delicious, characterful white Rhone.

"A very deep nose, cassis, leather and ripe red fruits. Real density and concentration on the nose. A dense and pure palate with a softness of fruit, beautifully tuned tannins – delicate and layered, savoury and with poise and elegance – a pepper note on the layered finish.
