Description

“The 2021 Laroque is very promising indeed, and winemaker David Suire and I agree that it is likely to surpass the estate’s 2018 vintage in quality. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, plums and cherries, framed by a discreet patina of new oak, it’s medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, with excellent concentration, lively acids and ripe, melting tannins. A blend of 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, it represents 45% of the estate’s production and derives from vines more than 50 years old.”

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Decanter 93

Great aromatics on the nose. Supple and generous on the palate, this has a spring it its step with crushed velvet tannis, bright fruit that has a gentle roundness to it and such lifted freshness giving this a lovely cool effect from start to finish. I love the strawberry and raspberry fruit here, so clean, so pure, so delicate and long. It’s not weighty but so well delivered. Lively and charming. Elegant, finessed, harmonious. [01/04/2022]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2040

Wines can be delivered duty-paid to UK addresses upon payment of the required duty, VAT, delivery and storage charges (if applicable). Duty and VAT are as set by HMRC at the time of delivery. Delivery charges are based on number of cases to be delivered and are standard for all UK addresses except highlands and islands. Please ask for a quotation for highlands and islands, transfers to another bonded warehouse and for international transfers.

Please read our Delivery page for more details.

Storage

Mr.Wheeler’s Private Reserves offer perfect storage conditions for your fine wine until you are ready to drink or sell it. Our in-bond facilities are temperature and moisture-controlled, fully insured at replacement value, and accessible whenever you want. At Mr.Wheeler’s specialist wine storage facility in Burton-Upon-Trent, all private client reserves are marked with a unique rotation number as required by HM Revenue & Customs for bonded goods. 2020 Chateau La Gaffeliere Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 12×37.5cl

RP96-98
"The 2020 La Conseillante is a blend of 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc. Seventy percent of the wine is being aged in new French oak barriques, 27% in second-fill barrels and 3% in amphorae. The... alcohol came in at 14% and the pH is 3.64. Deep purple-black colored, it sails gracefully out of the glass with vivacious notes of black raspberries, kirsch and redcurrant jelly, leading to suggestions of ripe, juicy blackberries, violets, star anise and iron ore with a faint waft of dried mint. The medium to full-bodied palate is an exercise in elegance, delivering a quiet intensity of pure, energetic red and black berry layers with gorgeous floral and mineral sparks, framed by perfectly ripe, finely pixilated tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length and the most breath-taking perfume. Simply mind-blowing." 96-98 pts., Lisa Perrotti-Brown, robertparker.com

2020 Chateau Angelus Premier Grand Cru Classe A, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM96-98
The wine displays a brilliant, dense, very dark, almost black colour with dark purple tones, mirroring the perfect ripeness of the grapes and their optimal pH level. The nose exhibits intense aromas... of juicy black fruits, such as wild cherries and blackberries. Elegant floral notes then come through, such as peony and violets. Refined tannins underpin a long-lasting, spherical, voluptuous structure on the palate, while the flavours linger long, bringing a sensation of freshness and harmony. This vintage displays a seldom-achieved degree of elegance, while the highest levels of purity and precision are reached with this blend of extraordinary Merlot and characterful Cabernet Franc.

2019 Petit-Figeac, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

JR18.5RP97WE99
"The 2019 Figeac has turned out brilliantly. Wafting from the glass with aromas of blackberries, cassis, warm spices, violets and pencil shavings, framed by a deft touch of nicely integrated new oak,... it's full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with terrific depth at the core, powdery structuring tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. Rich but vibrant, this 2019 reflects the new precision that Frédéric Faye has brought to Figeac; but while it's richer and more polished than the wines of yesteryear, the estate's identity hasn't been lost." 97pts., William Kelley, robertparker.com

2019 Chateau Tour Saint Christophe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

"The 2019 Tour Saint Christophe is a broad, powerful wine that captures all of the intensity typical of this sector of Saint-Émilion. Black cherry, espresso, chocolate, licorice, graphite and dark... spice give the 2019 a decidedly somber, brooding feel. There is plenty to look forward to here - that much is clear." 92-94 pts., Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com

"The 2019 Le Dragon de Quintus is lively and boisterous on the nose with plenty of brambly red fruit, briary and light rose petal aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with blackberry and red plummy fruit, a little "chunky" but very fresh with a surfeit of joie-de-vivre on the finish." 89-91 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

"The 2019 Le Petit Cheval has a vivid bouquet of raspberry, wild strawberry, black currant, and hints of fresh raisin and fig. The palate is medium-bodied with a granular texture and fine weight and... depth, delivering dark red berry fruit laced with brown spice and cracked black pepper. "80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. 35 hl/ha. Cask sample. Lively and fresh with red-berry notes. Tension and length on the palate but sufficient fruit to add a bit of flesh. Chalky, terroir finish but nothing tough or exaggerated. Pleasing medium-term drinking." 16 pts., James Lawther MW, jancisrobinson.com

2020 Chateau Laroque Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

RP94-96
Since 2015, head winemaker David Suire (of Château Beauséjour-Duffau-Lagarosse fame) has been responsible for this surge in quality and value at Château Laroque, and with 2020, he and his team... done it again with a seriously classy offering. Parcel selection here is key: for the grand vin, only those vines classified as Grand Cru Classé are used, which in this case make up two thirds of their total vineyard area and of these, only a further 27 of specially selected hectares. As such, this special selection gives over a vintage that is lush, rich and concentrated, with layers of velvety red, black and blue fruits, and a great purity that shines through a terrific freshness and elegance. Qualities you would expect in much pricier clarets and ones that will ensure many years of heightened complexity and sublime drinking pleasure. The grand vin is a blend of 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, aging between 16 to 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% new.

2019 Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

RP97
"The 2019 Le Tertre Roteboeuf is a terrific success from the Mitjaville family. This amphitheatrical vineyard on the clay-limestone slopes of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, planted with low,... cordon-trained vines, has delivered a striking wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with notions of violets, cigar box, sweet spices and loamy soil. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, velvety tannins and lively acids, it will richly reward a decade and more of bottle age. Interestingly, proprietor François Mitjaville contended that 2019's distribution of rainfall had tended to invert the usual stylistic distinction between Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes, his wine from the Côtes de Bourg; yet, on the day of our tasting, geology trumped weather, because as usual the former was more sensual, the latter blockier and more structured." 97 pts., William Kelley, robertparker.com

"60% Merlot, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc. 13% of production. Cask sample. Dark-fruit aroma. Long and linear on the palate, the Cabernet Sauvignon marking the blend (first time this much in Petit Cheval). Crunchy fruit with a firm grain of tannin. Structure for a bit of age." 16 pts. 2018 Chateau Laroque Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM92
"The 2018 Laroque fulfills the promise it showed from barrel last year. It has an irresistible bouquet of layered black cherry and blueberry fruit, fresh and lively with beautifully integrated oak.... The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity and a spicy, black-pepper-tinged finish that feels ever so slightly attenuated. Give this 3–4 years in bottle if you can." 92 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com
