Description

“The 2021 Laroque is very promising indeed, and winemaker David Suire and I agree that it is likely to surpass the estate’s 2018 vintage in quality. Unwinding in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, plums and cherries, framed by a discreet patina of new oak, it’s medium to full-bodied, seamless and complete, with excellent concentration, lively acids and ripe, melting tannins. A blend of 99% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, it represents 45% of the estate’s production and derives from vines more than 50 years old.”

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Decanter 93

Great aromatics on the nose. Supple and generous on the palate, this has a spring it its step with crushed velvet tannis, bright fruit that has a gentle roundness to it and such lifted freshness giving this a lovely cool effect from start to finish. I love the strawberry and raspberry fruit here, so clean, so pure, so delicate and long. It’s not weighty but so well delivered. Lively and charming. Elegant, finessed, harmonious. [01/04/2022]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2040

Delivery

We generally use specialised fine wine delivery couriers rather than standard couriers, giving a much higher level of care and accuracy in delivering fine wines safely to you. Wines can be delivered duty-paid to UK addresses upon payment of the required duty, VAT, delivery and storage charges (if applicable). Duty and VAT are as set by HMRC at the time of delivery. Delivery charges are based on number of cases to be delivered and are standard for all UK addresses except highlands and islands. Please ask for a quotation for highlands and islands, transfers to another bonded warehouse and for international transfers.

Please read our Delivery page for more details.

Storage

Mr.Wheeler’s Private Reserves offer perfect storage conditions for your fine wine until you are ready to drink or sell it. Our in-bond facilities are temperature and moisture-controlled, fully insured at replacement value, and accessible whenever you want. At Mr.Wheeler’s specialist wine storage facility in Burton-Upon-Trent, all private client reserves are marked with a unique rotation number as required by HM Revenue & Customs for bonded goods. In addition, each case of wine is clearly identifiable, confirming your ownership.

2021 Saintayme, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

DE92
"Ripe, perfumed nose. Bright, almost sour cherry and strawberry fruit on the palate, seriously searing, with such fresh acidities - a sharp direction upwards that quickly gets enveloped by slate... minerality and such exacting graphite touches on the palate that sweep the tongue, and leave a real iodine flavour on the finish. I love the nature of this, no frills, really showing the terroir in the glass and such clarity of the elements. Linear and focused. 60,000 bottle production. Ageing 30% in new oak." 92 pts., Georgina Hindle, decanter.com

2020 Petit-Figeac, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

Long one of the “hidden gems” of the top estates in St Emilion, Château Figeac has been going from strength to strength over the past 15 years, and with greater recognition, greater price tags... have come. Cue in “Petit-Figeac”, the estate’s second wine and a brilliant way to get this superb Château’s style, at a fraction of the cost. Figeac is undoubtedly one of the most successful and sought-after wines in 2020, and its little brother, with its opened aromatics, firm structure and velvety mouthfeel, is a must-have. A cabernet franc dominant cuvée also made only from vineyard fruit. A supple, expressive, and beautifully delineated wine, it is everything its name says and will easily continue as for the next 10 to 15 years.

2021 Chateau La Dominique Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

RP92-94
"Aromas of sweet cherries, berries, petals and loamy soil introduce the 2021 La Dominique, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless wine that's attractively deep and complete, with ripe tannins,... lively acids and a long, sapid finish. It's a blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Cabernet Sauvignon from this estate in the ascendant." 92-94, William Kelley, www.robertparker.com

2019 Chateau Tertre Roteboeuf, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 12x75cl

RP97
"The 2019 Le Tertre Roteboeuf is a terrific success from the Mitjaville family. This amphitheatrical vineyard on the clay-limestone slopes of Saint-Laurent-des-Combes, planted with low,... cordon-trained vines, has delivered a striking wine that wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with notions of violets, cigar box, sweet spices and loamy soil. Full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep core of fruit, velvety tannins and lively acids, it will richly reward a decade and more of bottle age. Interestingly, proprietor François Mitjaville contended that 2019's distribution of rainfall had tended to invert the usual stylistic distinction between Tertre Roteboeuf and Roc de Cambes, his wine from the Côtes de Bourg; yet, on the day of our tasting, geology trumped weather, because as usual the former was more sensual, the latter blockier and more structured." 97 pts., William Kelley, robertparker.com

2020 Chateau Berliquet Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM88-90
"The 2020 Berliquet has an open, quite generous bouquet of high-toned, quite floral aromas (iris and violet petals) mixed with Dorset plum, bilberry and wild strawberry. The palate is medium-bodied... with a medicinal, menthol-tinged opening, ripe and again, generous. The candied finish just needs to show a little more restraint. Fine, but it will have to manifest more elegance and composure by the time of bottling. Perhaps it was unfair to pour this against the 2020 Canon, also owned by the Wertheimer family, but it highlighted the difference between their respective terroirs." 88-90 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2019 Carillon d’Angelus, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM92
"The 2019 Le Carillon d'Angélus, bottled in May 2021, has a delineated, poised bouquet of those same aromas that I observed from the barrel sample bottle – black cherries, raspberry and iris... petals– though with a very slight marine influence that becomes more accentuated with time. The fresh palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainier tannins compared to last year, fine grip and a touch of black pepper toward the finish. This is a very fine Deuxième Vin that should drink well after 3–4 years... " 92 pts. Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2018 Croix Canon, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM92
"The 2018 Croix Canon is a total pleasure to taste today. Sumptuous and inviting, with so much appeal, Croix Canon is a fabulous wine to drink now and over the next decade, maybe more. Soft curves,... silky tannins and pliant fruit give the 2018 so much charm. Dark plum, spice, new leather, rose petal and mint all wrap around the juicy finish. In a word: exquisite." 92 pts., Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com

2021 Chateau La Gaffeliere Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM94-96
"The 2021 La Gaffelière was picked September 22 to October 15, and matured in 60% French new oak. There is a healthy 42% Cabernet Franc here. The nose is quite open with black cherry, blueberry and... touches of violet and peony; the oak is nicely integrated. In the mouth, this is medium-bodied with fine delineation, good focus and real midpalate weight. Conveying good intensity and vibrancy, this continues a strong run for this Saint-Émilion estate." 2018 Chateau Moulin Saint-Georges, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM93
"The 2018 Moulin Saint-Georges is packed with inky blue fruit, lavender, spice, mocha and licorice. Succulent and racy to the core, the 2018 offers tons of immediacy and charm. Silky tannins, soft... curves and tons of sheer allure make Moulin Saint-Georges a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next two decades. This joyous Saint-Émilion is a jewel of a wine." 92 pts., Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com

2021 Chateau Figeac Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM95-97
The 2021 Figeac was picked from September 21 until October 19 and matured, as usual, in 100% new oak. It has a very pure, elegant bouquet, the Cabernet Sauvignon imparting subtle pencil lead notes,... blackberry and briar, almost understated at first but gaining vigor with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity and just the right amount of sapidity. There is unerring symmetry about this Figeac, which is extremely focused yet unconcerned about showing off. There is lovely piquancy on the finish. Unequivocally one the finest Right Bank wines in 2021. Frédéric Faye continues to guide Figeac to the pinnacle of the appellation. (13.0% alcohol) 95-97 pts, Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2019 Chateau Berliquet Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl

VM92
"The 2019 Berliquet has a refined bouquet of lifted dried iris petal scents mingling with blackberry and wild strawberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins and fleshy red berry... fruit laced with tobacco and Chinese five-spice, and very well proportioned and detailed on the finish. Sophisticated. Tasted twice." 91 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com
