Description

Sheer Hermitage syrah elegance on full display: violet, black cherry, white pepper and liquorice nose; silky, juicy, sweet black/red cherry fruit, peppery, expansive and leading to ultra precision on a lingering finish. If you can resist the temptation of drinking this in 5 years, it will be extraordinary in 15.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Decanter 97

Introverted on the nose, but smooth and bold on the palate. A little more generosity and weight than some Hermitage this year, also slightly higher alcohol. Harmonious, with good acidity and integrated oak, it is detailed and defined on the palate. A large-framed but calm and collected wine with a good sense of purity and typicity, this is a serious Hermitage. Vines of nearly 50 years of age, grown organically on lieux-dits Beaumes and Péléat, matured in demi-muids with malolactic fermentation in barrel. [01/10/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2029-2043

Delivery & Storage

Delivery

We generally use specialised fine wine delivery couriers rather than standard couriers, giving a much higher level of care and accuracy in delivering fine wines safely to you. Wines can be delivered duty-paid to UK addresses upon payment of the required duty, VAT, delivery and storage charges (if applicable). Duty and VAT are as set by HMRC at the time of delivery. Delivery charges are based on number of cases to be delivered and are standard for all UK addresses except highlands and islands. Please ask for a quotation for highlands and islands, transfers to another bonded warehouse and for international transfers.

Please read our Delivery page for more details.

Storage

Mr.Wheeler’s Private Reserves offer perfect storage conditions for your fine wine until you are ready to drink or sell it. Our in-bond facilities are temperature and moisture-controlled, fully insured at replacement value, and accessible whenever you want. At Mr.Wheeler’s specialist wine storage facility in Burton-Upon-Trent, all private client reserves are marked with a unique rotation number as required by HM Revenue & Customs for bonded goods. In addition, each case of wine is clearly identifiable, confirming your ownership.

Please read our Fine Wine Storage page for more details.

2020 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage, La Chapelle Rouge 3x150cl

DE93
Blood-orange/grapefruit zest on a tight, polished nose; great minerality with deeper, plummier notes. A creamy, bitter black fruit palate; beautifully textured with an authentic, savoury, olive... tapenade core freshened further by a persistent streak of granite minerality and more juicy, deep citrus fruit. Proper grip and structure; very clean, long, peppery finish. Sheer elegance; utterly delicious.

"A superb Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Maison Bleue seamlessly blends cherries and cassis into a purple mashup of fruit carried on rich, velvety waves of texture. Full-bodied and intense, it... finishes complex and savory, adding notes of olive, clove and cedar on the long, luxurious finish. Already approachable, it should drink well through 2040." 95 pts., Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com

“Mostly sourced from les Murets, the 2020 Hermitage La Maison Bleue is a solid effort, with appealing notes of blackberries, raspberries and espresso on the nose. It's full-bodied and rich, yet... streamlined and focused, with savory tones of black olives appearing on the softly dusty finish. It should drink well young, yet age well for more than a decade.” 92-94 pts, Joe Czerwinski, www.robertparker.com, (Drink 2023-2035)

2019 Yann Chave, Hermitage 6x75cl

"A complex bouquet evokes ripe blackberry, cherry compote, licorice and violet, energized by a spicy cracked pepper nuance. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, offering densely packed, smoke-tinged... black/blue fruit, exotic spice and floral pastille flavors that pick up a minerally nuance as the wine opens up. Shows superb delineation and spicy lift on a long, silky finish framed by steadily building tannins. There were five demi-rnuids of this wine in 2019, all of them new." 94-96, Josh Raynolds, www.vinous.com

2017 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage, La Maison Bleue 6x75cl

"Jaboulet's 2017 Hermitage La Maison Bleue is flat-out sexy stuff, full-bodied, plush and generous without being overripe or unstructured. Licorice, cassis and Asian five-spice powder burst from the... glass in a complex whirl of scents and flavors. Sourced from the eastern end of the appellation, it offers immediate gratification and admirable quality at a fraction of the price of the La Chapelle." 95 pts., Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com

2018 M. Chapoutier, Hermitage, Chante-Alouette 6x75cl

JR17
"Looks quite deep gold and old! There was a very mature note on palate entry but then this was followed up by a distinctively green-fruit streak running through it – doubtless evidence of the... unusual ageing pattern of white Hermitage. I would hold on to it for a while now, though it was probably pretty winning at two years old." 17 pts., Jancis Robinson

"Sourced from the eastern portion of the hillside, the 2018 Hermitage La Maison Bleue is earthy, welcoming and open with hints of crushed stone accenting red raspberries and vanilla. Full-bodied and... lush, with a creamy texture, it's approachable young, yet still powerful, rich and long on the finish. I'd expect it to close down over the next couple of years, then reemerge and blossom after 2025 or so." 94 pts., Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com
