Description

Pavillon Rouge is the second wine of Chateau Margaux, whose quality closely approaches that of the first wine as all the plots involved contribute to the blending of Château Margaux. Not quite the same complexity, of course, nor the same depth or “magic”, however the flavours are close and the balance in the mouth leads to the same subtle senses of power and softness. Generally ready to drink a little earlier whilst retaining an excellent potential to age largely beyond 30 or 40 years.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Jane Anson 94

Sinewed muscle, nuanced aromatics, graphite, gunsmoke, fresh tobacco leaf and blackberry puree. Great purity of fruits, a ton of lift and freshly crushed mint leaf aromatics that grip and curl out of the glass. One of the really successful second wines in the vintage. 31% of the overall blend. 2% of Cabernet Franc completes the blend. [01/05/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2038

Delivery & Storage

Delivery

We generally use specialised fine wine delivery couriers rather than standard couriers, giving a much higher level of care and accuracy in delivering fine wines safely to you. Wines can be delivered duty-paid to UK addresses upon payment of the required duty, VAT, delivery and storage charges (if applicable). Duty and VAT are as set by HMRC at the time of delivery. Delivery charges are based on number of cases to be delivered and are standard for all UK addresses except highlands and islands. Please ask for a quotation for highlands and islands, transfers to another bonded warehouse and for international transfers.

Please read our Delivery page for more details.

Storage

Mr.Wheeler’s Private Reserves offer perfect storage conditions for your fine wine until you are ready to drink or sell it. Our in-bond facilities are temperature and moisture-controlled, fully insured at replacement value, and accessible whenever you want. At Mr.Wheeler’s specialist wine storage facility in Burton-Upon-Trent, all private client reserves are marked with a unique rotation number as required by HM Revenue & Customs for bonded goods. In addition, each case of wine is clearly identifiable, confirming your ownership.

2020 Chateau Siran, Margaux 6x75cl

VM92-94
From one of Margaux's most iconic producer that has been family-run for over 160 years, the 2020 vintage is an assemblage of 47% merlot, 43% cabernet sauvignon, 9% petit verdot and 1% cabernet franc... grown on the classic gravel, clay and pebble soils that defines this exclusive terroir. The 2020 vintage is the third of three consecutive, exceptional vintages and one in which this estate once again finds its ultimate expression.

2018 Chateau Angludet, Margaux 6x75cl

VM91
The 2018 Angludet has a very attractive bouquet of pure blackberry and blueberry fruit, a discreet floral element and glimpses of cassis coming through with aeration. It is delicate but very refined.... The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a little pinched on the entry but gradually fanning out toward the finish, which is detailed and full of tension. One of the best vintages of Angludet that I have tasted in recent years. 91 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2021 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux, Margaux 3x75cl

"Soft rose-touched blackcurrants, really quite delicate and pretty yet also expressive, the aromas clearly discernible in the glass with a vivid pink-purple rim. So smooth and quite sensuous, you get... the crushed velvet texture and thrashing acidity straight away, giving a round mouth, with these spikes of piquancy from the Petit Verdot. Really quite perfumed too. Vibrant with an excellent aromatic display and so much freshness. It’s on the tightrope - balancing the austerity and the plushness, the richness and the delicacy, the acidity and the structure. Tastes young and sparky, like a racing car ready to go, all energetic and buzzed. A great second wine. 4% Cabernet Franc completes the blend."

2021 Chateau Rauzan-Segla 2eme Cru Classe, Margaux 6x75cl

DE96
"A showstopper of a wine for me in 2021. Wonderful aromatic intensity on the nose filled with perfumed fruits, chocolate and wild flowers. Gorgeous clarity and precision, the tannins are fine and... powdery supporting the vibrant and energetic purple and black fruit; zingy blackcurrant, strawberry, cherry and plum with an overall creamy chalky texture and grip. Elegant and glamorous - so much styling on show, it feels polished and pristine with clear markings from the terroir but no harshness or austerity just great acidity and liveliness. Such mouthwatering salivation and lift at the end making you want another glass just to taste it again. Tasted twice and both times I loved it. Pure and precise with everything you want from a 2021." 96 pts., Georgina Hindle, decanter.com

2021 Chateau Siran, Margaux 6x75cl

JR16.5
"60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot, 1% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Smudgy rim and mid crimson. Not too dense and quite Margaux in build. Fresh with sufficient ripe fruit for the... far-from-excessive acidity. Quite long and subtle with a bone-dry finish. A transparent wine not as intricately woven as the Rauzan-Ségla but a very typical Margaux. A decidedly pretty wine and I know from experience how well Siran can age…" 16.5 pts., Jancis Robinson

2020 Chateau Palmer 3eme Cru Classe, Margaux 6x75cl

VM96-98
"The 2020 Palmer, which was matured in 65% new oak, possesses one of the most perfumed bouquets of the vintage with entrancing, seductive scents of black cherries, wild strawberry, iodine and crushed... violets, all beautifully delineated (as per usual). The palate is medium-bodied with fine but quite firm tannins, lending this Palmer more backbone than presupposed. Blackberry, graphite and touches of liquorice develop with aeration that build towards an assertive, pencil box-tinged finish that nods towards Pauillac. This is a Palmer destined for long-term ageing, so readers should have a cool damp cellar handy. It is a serious Palmer, very different from the previous two vintages, not a mix of the two, but content in just being itself." 96-98 pts. Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2020 Chateau d’Issan 3eme Cru Classe, Margaux 6x75cl

RP93-95
From one of the Left Bank's oldest properties dating back to the 12th-century and now run by the Lorenzetti family and located within a kilometre of the Chateau Margaux itself. Subtle fragrances and... moreish fruit in the 2020 d'Issan, and a third of three consecutive, stellar vintages and again an absolutely expression of Margaux terroir. Precision and elegance here combine for a an intensity of flavour defined by harmonious tannins that gives way to a long, generous finish.

2018 Chateau Brane-Cantenac 2eme Cru Classe, Margaux 12x75cl

VM95
"The 2018 Brane-Cantenac opens with a super-classic bouquet of dried herbs, pencil shavings, licorice and mint. Medium in body and wonderfully nuanced, Brane-Cantenac marries the natural richness of... the year with a classic structural feel. This is one of the most elegant, restrained 2018s readers will come across. I loved it." 95 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2018 Chateau Giscours 3eme Cru Classe, Margaux 6x75cl

VM94
"The 2018 Giscours was tasted alongside the 2019 for comparison. This is more extravagant on the nose, delivering slightly more red fruit, black pepper and touches of graphite. This has opened since... I last tasted it. The palate is medium-bodied with bold tannins, very smooth and more sensual than the 2019, and more flamboyant, though perhaps without the same precision. Still, this is very fine." 94 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2020 Chateau Giscours 3eme Cru Classe, Margaux 6x75cl

RP92-94
"A blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Merlot, the 2020 Giscours reveals a deep garnet-purple color and compelling notes of crushed redcurrants, plum preserves and Morello cherries, leading to... hints of lavender, wild sage, damp soil and black truffles with a touch of licorice. The medium-bodied palate bursts with vibrant red and black fruits and lots of savory accents, supported by soft, very well managed tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note." 92-94 pts., Lisa Perrotti-Brown, robertparker.com

2018 Chateau Marquis de Terme 4eme Cru Classe, Margaux 6x75cl

VM90-93
"The 2018 Marquis de Terme is pliant, racy and inviting. Silky tannins and plush, forward fruit add to the wine's undeniable appeal and sense of immediacy. Although not especially complex, this racy,... fruity Margaux has a ton to offer. Best of all, it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Tasted two times." 90-93 pts., Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com
