Olivier Lamy runs what is widely considered the finest estate in Saint-Aubin, and indeed one of the finest in the Côte d’Or. The wines here frequently put to shame Puligny or Chassagne at twice the price. Clearly one of Burgundy’s greatest talents, Olivier’s overriding pursuit of excellence in the vineyard, and of purity and definition in each and every cuvée yields wines of scintillating freshness, brilliant terroir expression and superb age worthiness. A Domaine to follow year in, year out, and in scintillating form once again.
Always one of the more instantly enjoyable cuvées here, in 2020 Clos de Meix is no exception, with pretty white flower and juicy citrus notes dominating the palate, yet as can be expected of one of Olivier’s wines, on the finish it moves on to much more minerally and savoury, spicy notes. One for earlier enjoyment for sure, but it will deliver on complexity all the same.

The 2020 Chablis Village comes from 50 different plots around 50 years old, the majority planted at the end of the 1960s. The simple but well-defined bouquet of Granny Smith apples is light and airy.... The palate is crisp and taut with citrus lemon and saline notes. Very citric on the finish, and not long, but it conveys satisfying energy at this level.

Benjamin has been a good friend of ours since his days at Comte Armand, and his powerful, impressive winemaking style shines through in 2020 where concentration meets with backbone and guile in the... Volnay commune. He remembers his first ever visit to the UK back in 1999 where he spent some time staying with Richard Wheeler (Johnny's father, sadly passed away last year), memorable not least for the friendly dispute regarding the relative merits of local Mersea native Oysters versus their French counterparts! Benjamin’s Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans reflects the greatest attributes of this excellent vintage. Density, richness and structure are all to the fore in a cuvée which gets better with every passing vintage.
With demand (and therefore prices) for St Aubin skyrocketing in recent years, Auxey-Duresses has replaced it as one of the best sources of value whites with more than a passing resemblance to the hallowed communes on the other side of the hill. Once again, Benjamin's hand is plain to see through this wonderfully fresh white of great textural interest - one to drink over the next 3 to 5 years, and a brilliant alternative to the classic styles.

From very old vines located just above le Montrachet, the position and low yield harvest promise excellence. This Chenevottes does not disappoint as it is once again a massive, concentrated wine with ripe toasty citrus fruit and an underlying vibrancy and precision that makes for gratifying drinking now and several years of graceful ageing.

A new addition to our portfolio last year, Sylvain Bzikot is at the head of the estate painstakingly assembled one parcel at a time by his grandparents in the 1940s, after a few years spent working... in the fields upon their arrival from Poland. Now consisting of an impressive 15 hectares, this Domaine is an excellent source of barrel-fermented Puligny-Montrachet with great typicity, at a very competitive price. Ignore at your peril!
Creamy texture coats a deliciously rich core of citrus fruit, with notes of peach and just a little hazelnut. Factor in a long finish carried on a well-defined spine of acidity and here is a lovely, approachable Puligny village to enjoy in 2 to 3 years.

The 2020 Chablis Bougros Grand Cru comes from six hectares of vines, southwest- and south-facing, forming the two different cuvées. The bouquet unfolds to offer lovely yellow fruit and oyster leaf... aromas, well defined and quite generous. The palate is taut and crisp with fine acidity and moderate depth, but very pretty and composed toward the saline finish. There is plenty of substance already in situ and I foresee this aging with class.
