Description

Ever known for its plush, ripe, pure and concentrated signature style, the 2020 upholds Poyferré’s consistency in producing one outstanding vintage after another: polished, silky, luscious, with layers of textured fruit that follow an intoxicating nose of incense, smoked berry, cassis and tobacco leaf. Its finish is as seamless as it is intense, with an expanding freshness across the palate.
With 2021 completing 20 exemplary years under the expertise of the Cuvelier family, the 2020 vintage marks the occasion with a gold-etched, commemorative label. An exclusive bottle to enhance a special collection.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Decanter 96

The 2020 Léoville Poyferré builds on the success of recent vintages, offering intense yet exquisitely defined black cherries, wild strawberry, cassis and crushed stone aromas. It is high-toned as usual but not quite as hedonistic as the recently tasted 2018. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins that belie the backbone of this Saint-Julien. Slightly lactic in texture toward the spicy finish; the oak will be assimilated by the time of bottling, leaving a very suave and sophisticated wine that will give 30–40 years of drinking pleasure. Easily one of the classiest offerings from this Saint-Julien in recent years. [20/05/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2028-2042

2020 Chateau Gloria, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

Château Gloria vineyard covers 50 hectares of vines in St-Julien of which 65% are cabernet sauvignon, with 25% merlot , 5% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot. 2018 Chateau Gruaud Larose 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

RP92
"Composed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Gruaud Larose has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It comes barreling out of the glass with powerful scents of... blackberry preserves, baked plums and crème de cassis plus hints of fruitcake, Indian spices and tobacco leaf. The medium to full-bodied palate offers bags of baked berries flavors and a chewy texture with just enough freshness, finishing spicy. Judging by the slightly rustic tannins and suggestions of dried berry characters, I'm guessing the heat and drought had an impact this year. This said, the wine is very well crafted and delicious right now, although a good 3-4 years in bottle should soften the tannins and bring out further nuances." 92 pts., Lisa Perrotti-Brown, www.robertparker.com

2020 La Croix de Beaucaillou, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

DE95
Deep, intense purple colour with freshness and nuances of graphite and mineral on the nose. Toasted spice follows, with sweeter vanilla tones overlaying an earthy core. The palate is incredibly juicy... with great fruit concentration bringing lovely weight and volume. Tannins are quite fine, integrated and accessible now, defining ripe plum and blackcurrant fruit, with sweeter milk chocolate tones ending with tremendous length and freshness. An out-and-out crowd pleaser.

2019 Connetable Talbot, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

"The 2019 Connetable Talbot is a hearty, rustic wine. Black cherry, dark spice, leather, tobacco and game show a good deal of intensity. ...this is nicely done and a tasty second wine from Talbot." 88 pts., Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com

2020 Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 3x150cl

DE95
As Chateau Talbot’s third vintage under the direction of Jean-Michel Laporte (ex-La Conseillante) overlapped a trio of consecutive great years in Bordeaux, there was every indication that his 2020... would create as much anticipation as his 18’s and 19’s. That expectation was fully justified with the refinement and elegance this St Julien gem continues show. A blend of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, the vintage shows a floral and fruit spectrum on the nose, with blackcurrant, berry and cassis; lifted, concentrated and fresh, its palate is expansive with a delicious lick of minerality, one whose elegance is matched only by a terrific length.

2020 Chateau Branaire-Ducru 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

RP94-96
St-Julien 4ème Cru Château Branaire-Ducru is situated in the extreme south of the appellation just opposite an equally renowned Chateau Beychevelle and is appreciated for the Left Bank’s more... ethereal expressions of Cabernet-led cuvées. With the late owner Patrick Maroteaux’s extensive technical improvements introduced over the past twenty years at the chateau, Branaire-Ducru ranks indisputably among Saint-Julien's finest. The 2020 is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, grown in 60 Ha of deep, gravelly soil, having spent 16-20 months in 60-65% new oak. Fresh raspberry, red currant and graphite abound, with a well-defined, grippy structure that delivers chiselled, sweet and bitter blackberry on the finish.

1995 Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

RP95
The 1995 and 1996 Las-Cases are both monumental wines and the former does not disappoint here. It has a spellbinding nose of blackberry, cassis, melted tar and sous-bois with so much vibrancy and... vivacity. The palate is full-bodied with succulent, rounded tannins, enormous depth and power. The finish is beautifully poised and minerally, much more feminine than the ’96. This is a Las-Cases with guile and grace, but it deserves at least 2 hours decanting to open up. Tasted February 2011. 96 pts., Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

2018 Chateau Leoville Poyferre 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

VM97
"The 2018 Léoville Poyferré has a glorious bouquet of layers of black cherry, blueberry, violet and potpourri that is opulent yet (paradoxically) effortlessly controlled. The palate is... medium-bodied with supple tannins. Some of the puppy fat that enveloped this wine from barrel has gone, revealing more backbone and an impressive sense of cohesion and symmetry on the finish. This is an outstanding Léoville Poyferré that has gained another level of complexity since I tasted it from barrel." 95 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2017 Chateau Gloria, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

DE16
"Tasted blind. Deep ruby-purple colour. Slightly reticent but pure cassis fruit on the nose. The depth comes on the palate – there is real drive of black fruit and bright acidity to offer real... energy. There is a sweet, juicy edge to the fruit that makes this soft and approachable. The tannins are fine and offer a delicate structure against the fruit. Should drink well in the medium term." 16 pts., Tom Parker MW, jancisrobinson.com

2020 Chateau Lagrange 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

RP94-96
Château Lagrange is 66% Cabernet, 27% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot aged up to 21 months in 60% new oak and is grown across 102 separate parcels on two gently sloping, gravelly hillsides. Lagrange... is excellent value and of a vintage that is sure to appreciate consistently in coming years. With quality particularly high this year, yields from their impressive 138 hectares are particularly the opposite - a now-familiar narrative during the EP campaign so far. Forest leaf, cedar and a cigar box of florals enhance decent ripeness; creamy, spicy, long and vibrant fruit, it is a wine full of life and surely one to enjoy it at much length in your cellar.
