Description

St-Julien 4ème Cru Château Branaire-Ducru is situated in the extreme south of the appellation just opposite an equally renowned Chateau Beychevelle and is appreciated for the Left Bank’s more ethereal expressions of Cabernet-led cuvées.
With the late owner Patrick Maroteaux’s extensive technical improvements introduced over the past twenty years at the chateau, Branaire-Ducru ranks indisputably among Saint-Julien’s finest.
The 2020 is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, grown in 60 Ha of deep, gravelly soil, having spent 16-20 months in 60-65% new oak. Fresh raspberry, red currant and graphite abound, with a well-defined, grippy structure that delivers chiselled, sweet and bitter blackberry on the finish.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Robert Parker 94-96

The 2020 Branaire-Ducru is utterly magnificent. A wine of extraordinary depth and dimension, the 2020 possesses tremendous intensity right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, chocolate, new leather, licorice, cloves and lavender build as into the explosive, palate-staining finish. I don’t think I have ever tasted a Branaire quite like this. [01/06/2021]

Wines can be delivered duty-paid to UK addresses upon payment of the required duty, VAT, delivery and storage charges (if applicable). Duty and VAT are as set by HMRC at the time of delivery. Delivery charges are based on number of cases to be delivered and are standard for all UK addresses except highlands and islands. Please ask for a quotation for highlands and islands, transfers to another bonded warehouse and for international transfers.

Please read our Delivery page for more details.

Storage

Mr.Wheeler’s Private Reserves offer perfect storage conditions for your fine wine until you are ready to drink or sell it. Our in-bond facilities are temperature and moisture-controlled, fully insured at replacement value, and accessible whenever you want. At Mr.Wheeler’s specialist wine storage facility in Burton-Upon-Trent, all private client reserves are marked with a unique rotation number as required by HM Revenue & Customs for bonded goods. In addition, each case of wine is clearly identifiable, confirming your ownership.

2021 Chateau Talbot 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

DE93
"Spearmint and blackcurrants on the nose with some gorgeous perfume too. Excellent intensity of blackcurrant juice, not fleshy, more linear and direct, the lightness of flavour balancing with fine,... just gripping tannins that also offer touches of tobacco and toasted spice flavours. It's overall quite a delicate and well worked wine for the vintage, with gentle fruit persistence and a lifted finish. Will no doubt round out over ageing, giving more density to the really beautifully presented floral-touched bramble fruit. Elegance and class; promising indeed." 93 pts., Georgina Hindle, decanter.com

2021 Ducru-Beaucaillou 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

DE96
"Beautiful and beguiling nose, perfumed blackcurrants and dark fruits; damsons, plums, raspberries and rose petals. Lovely crunchy fruit, real bite and presence in the mouth. Excellent precision,... tannins are succulent and ripe they fill the mouth with a juicy, intense granular texture. There is such depth to this - perfume, tobacco, earth, violets and concentrated fruits that have a verticality to them with an unprecedented 98% of Cabernet Sauvignon providing the support and the backbone. There is a crystalline purity to the fruit giving tension to the overall frame, it’s focussed and driven all with excellent definition. This is not a wallflower of a wine - it’s charming and confident, strutting its stuff right now and giving you absolut St-Julien terroir and vintage markers in the glass with slate, graphite and liquorice salinity on show. Skilled winemaking on show." 96 pts., Georgina Hindle, decanter.com

2020 Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

RP96-98
As one of the commune’s oldest and largest classified growths, Las Cases is also considered by many to be its leading estate - one which high critics’ scores tend to follow. Both Neal Martin and... The Wine Advocate have awarded the 2020 vintage a potential 96-98 points with 96 from Decanter and Jancis Robinson, 17.5+ from. This year’s Las Cases shows real finesse and a pronounced minerality underlying sumptuous, full-bodied layers of black cherry and currant fruit; it is dense, concentrated and focused with a firm tannic structure that will see it through many decades to come.

2018 Chateau Leoville Barton 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

VM96
"The 2018 Léoville-Barton is a gorgeous, exotic wine. Crème de cassis, lavender, menthol, licorice and cloves race out of the glass. The 2018 marries the natural opulence of the year with a pretty... classic sense of structure, making for one of the more compelling wines of the year. I would give this a good decade in the cellar. There is much to look forward to. I especially admire the energy and poise here." 96 pts., Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com

1995 Chateau Leoville Las Cases 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

RP95
The 1995 and 1996 Las-Cases are both monumental wines and the former does not disappoint here. It has a spellbinding nose of blackberry, cassis, melted tar and sous-bois with so much vibrancy and... vivacity. The palate is full-bodied with succulent, rounded tannins, enormous depth and power. The finish is beautifully poised and minerally, much more feminine than the ’96. This is a Las-Cases with guile and grace, but it deserves at least 2 hours decanting to open up. Tasted February 2011. 96 pts., Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate

2018 Chateau Gruaud Larose 2eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

RP92
"Composed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Gruaud Larose has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It comes barreling out of the glass with powerful scents of... blackberry preserves, baked plums and crème de cassis plus hints of fruitcake, Indian spices and tobacco leaf. The medium to full-bodied palate offers bags of baked berries flavors and a chewy texture with just enough freshness, finishing spicy. Judging by the slightly rustic tannins and suggestions of dried berry characters, I'm guessing the heat and drought had an impact this year. This said, the wine is very well crafted and delicious right now, although a good 3-4 years in bottle should soften the tannins and bring out further nuances." 92 pts., Lisa Perrotti-Brown, www.robertparker.com

"This is excellent, really the most gorgeous balance of power, with dark blueberry juicy fruits and lots of liquorice. Excellent balance and a seductive overall frame. Great stuff - the tannins are pretty fierce though, needs time, will reward ageing." 94 pts., Jane Anson, decanter.com

2021 Chateau Lagrange 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 12x75cl

DE93
"Super-floral on the nose, a celebration of peony, violet and rose flowers. Juicy and supple with a real life-force. The starts off bright and upfront with strawberry and red cherry notes that merge... into a darker, more savoury mid-palate full of slate and chocolate. I like the persistence here, the clarity of the fruit expression and the brightness. It's not the most expansive but the individual elements are so well presented with detail on show. A great effort in the vintage with no drop in the mid-palate, acidity in check and nice floral fruit." 93 pts., Georgina Hindle, decanter.com

2017 Clos du Marquis, Saint-Julien 6x75cl

A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Clos du Marquis is medium to deep garnet-purple in color and struts confidently out of the glass with vibrant notes of... crushed blackcurrants, warm blackberries and fresh black and red plums with touches of cigar box and bouquet garni. Medium-bodied, the palate is chock-full of zingy black fruits, framed by firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing long with a skip in its step.
