Description

The 2018 Batailley, matured in 60% new oak, is almost identical on the nose as I found it in barrel, decked out with attractive black cherries and cassis notes, the cedar element a little heightened and freshly rolled tobacco notes developing with aeration. Very fine delineation here, and the oak is well integrated. The balanced palate offers fine tannins that frame the blackberry and bilberry fruit. The salinity comes through nicely on the finish, which is less silky than before, but it waves adieu with a long spicy aftertaste. Very fine and very Batailley. 93 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

Delivery & Storage

Delivery

We generally use specialised fine wine delivery couriers rather than standard couriers, giving a much higher level of care and accuracy in delivering fine wines safely to you. Wines can be delivered duty-paid to UK addresses upon payment of the required duty, VAT, delivery and storage charges (if applicable). Duty and VAT are as set by HMRC at the time of delivery. Delivery charges are based on number of cases to be delivered and are standard for all UK addresses except highlands and islands. Please ask for a quotation for highlands and islands, transfers to another bonded warehouse and for international transfers.

Please read our Delivery page for more details.

Storage

Mr.Wheeler’s Private Reserves offer perfect storage conditions for your fine wine until you are ready to drink or sell it. Our in-bond facilities are temperature and moisture-controlled, fully insured at replacement value, and accessible whenever you want. At Mr.Wheeler’s specialist wine storage facility in Burton-Upon-Trent, all private client reserves are marked with a unique rotation number as required by HM Revenue & Customs for bonded goods. In addition, each case of wine is clearly identifiable, confirming your ownership.

2018 Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 6x75cl

VM96
"The 2018 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fabulous, just as it was from barrel. Strong Cabernet inflections soar out of the glass, giving the wine a compelling aromatic profile laced with the essence of... graphite, dried herbs, menthol and dark fruit. One of the most classic (for lack of a better word) wines in the Left Bank in 2018, Grand-Puy-Lacoste is super-impressive right out of the gate. Grand-Puy-Lacoste is ultimately a wine of tremendous class that remains restrained and aristocratic in breeding. Don't miss it." 96 pts., Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com

2017 Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 6x75cl

RP94
"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 Lynch Bages sashays out of the glass with flamboyant scents of baked blackcurrants, blackberry preserves and mulberries plus touches of lavender, dark chocolate,... star anise and unsmoked cigars. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has bags of class and finesse with firm, finely-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and fragrant." 94 pts., Lisa Perrotti-Brown, robertparker.com

2020 Chateau Batailley 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 6x75cl

VM93-95
"The 2020 Batailley is quintessential Pauillac on the nose of very focused black fruit infused with cedar and graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with firm, grippy tannins and a fine bead of... acidity. Classic in style, this is lightly spiced, showing impressive depth toward the finish. This estate has enjoyed a good run of form in recent years and this 2020 continues that trend. If you love the style of Batailley, you will love this." 93-95 pts., Neal Martin, www.vinous.com

2021 Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 3x75cl

VM94-96
"The 2021 Grand-Puy-Lacoste if fabulous. Bright and punchy, with terrific aromatic presence, the 2021 is a terrific example of the modern classicism of the year at its best. It’s the sort of wine... that needs years or maybe even decades to truly blossom, and yet all the requisites are there for that to happen. There is something about Grand-Puy-Lacoste that is absolutely striking in 2021. I can’t wait to taste it from bottle. Tasted two times." 94-96 pts, Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com

2020 Chateau Pibran, Pauillac 6x75cl

RP90-92
"A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Pibran is being aged for an estimated 18 months in French oak, 50% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it is a little shy to begin, requiring... considerable swirling to unlock wonderfully pure scents of crushed blackcurrants, fresh blackberries and wild blueberries, plus hints of lilacs, wild sage, pencil lead and cinnamon stick. The medium to full-bodied palate coats the mouth in expressive, well-defined black fruits, supported by grainy tannins and well-balanced acidity, finishing long and mineral laced." 90-92 pts., Lisa Perrotti-Brown, robertparker.com

2020 Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 6x75cl

RP95-97
"Deep purple-black in color, the 2020 Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande begins on a single, well-defined, wonderfully pure note of ripe blackcurrants, opening out to a melody of redcurrant... jelly, kirsch, ripe blackberries and tar, with emerging suggestions of dark chocolate, cardamom, ground cloves and violets, with a waft of black truffles. Medium-bodied, tightly wound and with loads of fantastically nuanced black fruit layers, it has a rock-solid frame of finely grained tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and mineral laced. The blend this year is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 6% Cabernet Franc." 95-97 pts., Lisa Perrotti-Brown, robertparker.com

2018 Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 6x75cl

VM94
"The 2018 Haut-Bages Libéral is super-impressive right out of the gate. It shows all the depth and intensity I saw from barrel, with maybe a bit more tannic impact. Ripe red cherry, plum, orange... peel, cedar and sweet spice all build in the glass. The 2018 is going to need a few years to come into its own, but it is a gorgeous Pauillac." 94+ pts., Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com

2021 Reserve de la Comtesse, Pauillac 6x75cl

RP89-91
"The 2021 Resèrve de la Comtesse offers up aromas of sweet berry fruit, blackcurrants, petals and classy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and impressively concentrated palate... that's framed by lively acids and beautifully refined tannins. It's a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 11% Petit Verdot, and Nicolas Glumineau tells me that some wine was sold off in bulk this year to guarantee the quality of the Resèreve. It's certainly among the best second wines of the vintage." 89-91 pts., William Kelley, robertparker.com

2021 Chateau Pibran, Pauillac 6x75cl

DE90
"Gorgeous florally, so sweet and welcoming. Lightly framed, delicate but fun and playful. Sweet purple flowers. Smooth, sweet but also sour, the succulent and creamy chalkiness is lovely. A nice... balance between the sweet fruit, the floral flowers and the freshness. Tannins are so fine and integrated. Such easy drinking, still with quite a vein and backbone of the spiced minerality - really long length. It’s gentle with this depth of flavour and intensity of perfume while still being light but the spice also gives depth. A lot going on here, with this lick of stone and graphite, dark chocolate and clove." 90 pts., Georgina Hindle, decanter.com

2020 Lacoste-Borie, Pauillac 6x75cl

5th-growth, Chateau Grand Puy Lacoste describes 2020 as a more “classical in style” than 2018 and 2019, where, instead of the flamboyance evident in the preceding two vintages, here we're back to... classical lines, structure and finesse. The great Pauillac estate's second label is ever-charming with plenty of beautifully pitched, fragrant sweet red fruit. Classic, correct, and with enough weight to promise much pleasurable, early drinking. Mr.Wheeler Tasting Note

2019 Echo de Lynch Bages, Pauillac 6x75cl

VM90
"The 2019 Echo Lynch Bages is an absolutely joyous second wine. Ripe, plummy and wonderfully forward, the 2019 Echo is all pleasure. The signature of the house style comes through loud and clear. Hints of spice, tobacco and cedar round out the creamy, inviting finish." 92 pts., Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com

2021 Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 6x75cl

DE95
"The second vintage vinified in the Caze family's new winery, the 2021 Lynch-Bages unwinds in the glass with aromas of minty cassis, sweet berries, loamy soil, black truffle and cigar wrapper, framed... by nicely integrated new oak. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated and muscular, it's a serious, layered, powerful, youthfully structured wine that will come together beautifully with maturation in barrel." 93-95 pts., William Kelley, robertparker.com
