2020 Chateau Canon Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 6x75cl
The 2020 Canon is a wine of mind-blowing purity and nuance. It has been nothing less than thrilling on the three occasions I have tasted it so for. Intensely saline and chalky, the 2020 possesses... spellbinding finesse and nuance. Red-toned fruit, crushed rocks, white pepper, rose petal and mint all come alive in the glass, buttressed by clean saline notes that extend the mid-palate into the finish. There is simply nothing like great Canon. And the 2020 is unquestionably a great Canon.

"Dramatic, intense and powerful, the 2016 Amon Ra Shiraz recalls the 2004 in its youth, crammed with layers of fruit, complex, savory elements and rich, velvety tannins. It's full-bodied,... characterized by notes of grilled meat, espresso, black olive, cassis, vanilla, baking spices and an undercurrent of loamy earth. Yes, it's unapologetically big and bold, the product of a warm, sunny climate and ripe grapes, but it does show a sense of decorum, restraint and elegance on the long finish." 96 pts., Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com
£335 / Case£55.83 / BottleDuty Status: In BondAvailability: En Primeur2008 Pierre Moncuit, Millesime Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Grand Cru 6x75cl
"Moncuit's Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Millesime shows a different facet of its personality in this version, with lower dosage vis-à-vis the Brut version. Here the flavors are brighter and... more sculpted throughout. Hints of toastiness, almond and tangerine oil add an exotic flair that makes the Extra Brut absolutely beguiling. Lower dosage seems to exalt the minerality and bright acids of the year, while pushing the fruit a bit into the background. Both Brut and Extra Brut bottlings are terrific; choosing among them comes down to personal preference. Dosage is grams per liter. Disgorged November 2020. "

Powerful and textured, the 2012 Blanc de Blancs from Moncuit follows in the footsteps of the superb 2008 vintage. Opulent on the nose with gorgeous lemon curd on toasted brioche with notes of ... hazelnut, a motif that follows through on the palate. An impressively rich and seductive Blanc de Blancs, and yet there is a gorgeous, minerally spine of acidity. Long and with a glorious future ahead for the next ten years or so.

"Complexity is the watchword of 2008, reflected by the fact that Alice Tétienne is unable to pick a single ‘leading’ cru to define its characteristics; in fact, the wine boasts both the purity... and luminosity of the Chardonnay village of Le Mesnil-Sur-Oger, and at the same time the generosity and latent power of the Pinot Noir which comes from the grand cru of Verzenay. Only disgorged four months previously, the wine is reticent, but only up to a point. One can already discern the seductive marriage of power and elegance which looks set to inform its future. Rapier acidity already sits comfortably with well-upholstered fruit and the combination lends intimations of a long and happy evolution. Disgorged: November 2022. Dosage: 5g/L."

"The 2021 Morgon Côte du Py is excellent, offering up aromas of cherries, plums and berries mingled with notions of peony, burning embers and sweet spices. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy,... it's seamless and succulent, with melting tannins, lively acids and a long, precise finish. After the richer, more powerful 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 vintages, the 2021 marks a return to a more classically proportioned style, even if Burgaud did a great job of avoiding excess and maximizing the potential of those riper vintages." 93 pts., William Kelley, robertparker.com

"Suave and sophisticated, the 2018 Pichon Boron is a real heod-turner. Silky, polished tannins wrap oround a core of inky dark red/purplish berry fruit. More than anything else, the 2018 impresses... for its exceptionol balance. All the elements are so impeccably balanced. That will make the 2018 eosy to drink relatively early, olthough my preference would be to leave it in the cellor for the better part of the next decade. Rose petal, spice, blood orange and mint add brightness and perfume on the long, finely-knit finish." 97 pts., Antonio Galloni, vinous.com

"The 2019 Malbec Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae is made with grapes from parcel 6 of the Adrianna Vineyard, Uco Valley, planted in Gualtallary at a height of 4,400 feet and aged for 18 months in... new and second use French barrels. The pure, intense and precisely judged nose offers delicate fruit such as sweet and sour cherry alongside hints of lavender and violet and faint herbal aromas. It’s relaxed and juicy on the palate with subtle, finely grained tannins and a little chalk. The finish is elongated by fruity flavors. The year helped with the nuanced freshness in this Malbec." 95 pts., Joaquin Hidalgo, vinous.com

“The 2014 Beychevelle has a very comely, pure bouquet with heightened dark cherry, blackcurrant and wilted violet scents rendering it almost more Margaux-like than Saint Julien. The palate is... medium-bodied, svelte in texture with light tannin. It is a nimble Beychevelle, light on its feet with wonderful freshness and tension towards the finish. This is a very well-crafted wine from Philippe Blanc and his team, a St. Julien that is nimble on its toes.” 92 pts., Neal Martin, robertparker.com

Elegant, lively fruit followed by bags of coating, bitter-sweet tannins that... are still a little tough and with marked acidity on the finish, but this has the bones for ageing." 17.5pts., Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, 14/5/2019

“... The results are breath-taking. Purple in the glass with garnet flecks, this wine delivers layers of aroma, beginning with black currant and moving on to intense, precise notes of lavender and... mint along with hints of black tea, sage and cigar box. In the mouth, austerity vies for supremacy with sheer power, a balance overseen by polished, grippy tannins placed into relief by a well-judged freshness that keeps the whole package light on its feet. This is a wine of tension foregrounded by the blend: the Malbec smooths out the Cabernet Sauvignon, which in turn brings energy to a red with an extremely long finish.” 96 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, www.vinous.com

Domaine Livera is one of the best additions to our portfolio in recent years, and you don’t need to climb the quality ladder very far to realise why. "Possibly the most complete Hunting Hill Chardonnay I've tasted in youth, the 2020 provides harmonious, melt-in-your-mouth impression. It has breadth and concentration but retains a sense of... elegance on the midpalate before finishing with precision and length. Yes, there's a little bit of flint character too, but then Hunting Hill is known to be reductive; give it time. Like Forrest Gump, it runs through a finish line and keeps on going effortlessly. There's no box of chocolates here, though; it's all white nectarine, citrus, white flowers and o touch of smoked nuts." 95 pts., Rebecca Gibb MW, vinous.com

"Now on the market, the Mazzei 2019 Siepi is a special achievement and a delight to taste at the exciting conclusion of this historic retrospective spanning 26 vintages. This edition of Marchesi... Mazzei's celebrated blend of Merlot and Sangiovese benefited from ideal growing conditions, with warm days and cool nights throughout the summer season. The clusters were healthy and full. The fruit is crisp and fresh, and the tannins serve to softly support the wine's generous texture and fiber. The 2019 vintage also achieves balance with a pretty assembly of dark fruit, mineral and spice aromas." 96 pts., Monica Larner, robertparker.com

"A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, aged for approximately 18 months in oak barriques, 35% new, the 2018 Domaine de Chevalier has a deep garnet-purple color, pouncing... out of the glass with energetic scents of crushed blackcurrants, fresh, juicy blackberries and ripe plums, with suggestions of crushed rocks, bay leaves, unsmoked cigars and lavender. The medium to full-bodied palate is packed with muscular black fruits, framed by firm, ripe, grainy tannins and great tension, finishing long and mineral laced.
