2020 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Crozes-Hermitage, Domaine de Thalabert 6x75cl

JR16.5VM92-94
"Shimmering ruby. Expressive, spice-accented red and dark berry aromas are complemented by suggestions of olive, espresso and candied flowers. Juicy and energetic on the palate, offering gently sweet... cherry and cassis flavors that deepen through the back half. Finishes very long, spicy and smooth, with even tannins lending final grip." 92-94 pts., Josh Raynolds, vinous.com

2019 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage, La Maison Bleue 6x75cl

RP95
"A superb Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Maison Bleue seamlessly blends cherries and cassis into a purple mashup of fruit carried on rich, velvety waves of texture. Full-bodied and intense, it... finishes complex and savory, adding notes of olive, clove and cedar on the long, luxurious finish. Already approachable, it should drink well through 2040." 95 pts., Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com

2019 Le Difese, Tenuta San Guido, Toscana 6x75cl

"Surprisingly pale – more Pinot-like than a Cabernet blend! A sweet-sour red-cherry fruit profile, with a notable herbal edge, perhaps reflecting the higher Sangiovese proportion than 2018. On... swirling, some cassis joins the party and there’s a background woody, cinnamon note. That sweet-sour sense comes through on the palate too, with a ripeness of red cherry and strawberry cut through with acidity. Pretty fine-grained, powdery tannins that are more refined than previous Le Difese vintages I have tasted. A touch of alcohol on the finish, but overall an enjoyable, perfumed red." 16 pts., Tim Jackson MW, jancisrobinson.com

"Seemingly refined by the additional elevage since I reviewed a barrel sample last year, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert remains a big, rich, dark-fruited and almost tarry effort, but... this full-bodied wine is pleasantly velvety and marked by savory notes of scorched wood and black olive tapenade that linger on the finish." 93+ pts., Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com

2020 Sylvie Esmonin, Bourgogne, Cuvee Sylvie 6x75cl

VM85-87
Located in the old part of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, at the foot of the legendary Clos Saint Jacques vineyard, since 1988 the scrupulous Sylvie cultivates 7 ha under her own name. Her deep... knowledge of the vines and meticulous vinification techniques result in wines of great maturity and intensity, capable of great ageing potential. As you'd expect, these wines are in very high demand and Mr.Wheeler are delighted to be offering a selection of Sylvie’s wines for the third vintage in a row. We urge you to snap up a case or two of these sensational wines, whilst you can. Sylvie delivers a fine Bourgogne Rouge in 2020 - for the first time the cuvée includes some Morey-St-Denis fruit, and it shows in the lightly spicy edge that lifts up the core of raspberry coulis with hints of black cherry. Early picking has once again given the spine of acidity making this so moreish. It will age well mid-term - but only if you manage to resist its youthful charm.

2020 Domaine du Tunnel, Cornas, Vin Noir 6x75cl

Another example of the new and refined direction in which Tunnel take Cornas. No longer the rusticity that had been typically associated with the appellation; rather, an enticingly elegant, polished... nose of black cherry and liquorice; an ultra silkiness on the palate, grippy, dense, dark black fruit and flavours of olive tapenade and corresponding sweet spice. Fresh, clean, powerful length. From 80-100-year-old vines.

2020 Domaine du Tunnel, Saint-Joseph 6x75cl

An enticing expression of this more 'rustic' of appellations, still starting with a beautifully refined nose of black pepper, spice, bay leaf and mineral notes. On the palate, invigorating streaks of... creamy minerality; juicy black bitter/sweet olive fruit and liquorice that is clean, grippy and lingering. It promises supreme drinking pleasure in 5-7 years' time.

2020 Domaine du Tunnel, La Chanson, Condrieu 6x75cl

JD98
Stéphane Robert will typically make only 2 barrels of La Chanson vineyard in a vintage. 100% viognier, that is vinified as is his St Péray to obtain a similar level of invigorating freshness. and... aged for 8 months. Pale yellow, with a gorgeous nose of apricot and white flowers that leads to an aromatic, expansive palate redolent of stone fruit, dried herbs, almonds and white honey. A fantastic foodie alternative to white burgundy.

2020 Domaine du Tunnel, Saint-Peray, Roussanne 3x150cl

This has always been one of our favourite wines from the Tunnel range – a real tour de force, and a great expression of the Roussanne grape. Perfumed and aromatic, with a little barrel-ageing... adding some toast and exotic spice. Rich and luscious, with rounded peach and pear fruit, but finishing with a mouth-watering citrus freshness. A delicious, characterful white Rhone.

WS95
"This is really packed, offering dense waves of cassis, plum compote and blackberry reduction flavors that stay well-defined as they rumble through, with ample cast iron, sweet tapenade, lavender and... bay leaf accents. There's loads of grip on the back end, but it's well-integrated, so just let this unwind in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2038." 95 pts., James Molesworth, winespectator.com

2018 G.D. Vajra, Barolo, Albe 6x75cl

JR17
"Lovely Nebbiolo aromas of rose, violet, red berry and botanical herb shape the fragrant nose. Smooth and savory, the elegant palate features juicy red cherry, crushed raspberry and cake spice... alongside polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. It's already drinking beautifully but also promises years of pleasure. Enjoy through 2030." 94 pts., Kerin O'Keefe, 9/1/2022

2017 G.D. Vajra, Barolo, Bricco delle Viole 6x75cl

JR17.5WE96
"Transparent pillar-box red. Powerful nose of dried something. Cherries? Rose petals? Perhaps both. Super-fresh, despite the alcohol, with such great presence in the mouth. It's not nearly ready but... it's clearly destined for great things. Sweet and chewy with a strong mineral undertow. Jewel-bright fruit. Real lift but more powerful than ethereal. Even slightly pungent with a whiff of cordite. Really refreshing health juice. Great stuff." 17.5 pts., Jancis Robinson, 10/3/2021

"Sandalwood and culinary spice aromas mingle with rose leather and camphor. Showing structure and a racy finesse, the vibrant palate is young and loaded with nervous energy at this stage but already... delicious, offering juicy Morello cherry, raspberry and star anise framed in taut, refined tannins and bright acidity. Drink 2029–2044." 95 pts., Kerin O'Keefe, winemag.com

2018 Giovanni Almondo, Roero, Bric Valdiana 6x75cl

The Almondo family have been in Piedmont for the past 600 years, yet their foray into winemaking only dates to 1980 when Domenico came up with an ambitious plan to create top quality wine from their... family vineyard. The result is superb, and the Roero Bric is a Nebbiolo-based red cuvée that will age beautifully and represents a stunning value alternative to the more famous names across the Tanaro river, Barbaresco or Barolo. The 2021 exhibits tell-tale floral and sweet yet crunchy red cherry aromatics, with hints of peppery spice. Lovely mouthfill and power, this is very pleasant now and will improve for the next 5 to 7 years. (Mr.Wheeler tasting note)

2018 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage, La Maison Bleue 6x75cl

RP94
"Sourced from the eastern portion of the hillside, the 2018 Hermitage La Maison Bleue is earthy, welcoming and open with hints of crushed stone accenting red raspberries and vanilla. Full-bodied and... lush, with a creamy texture, it's approachable young, yet still powerful, rich and long on the finish. I'd expect it to close down over the next couple of years, then reemerge and blossom after 2025 or so." 94 pts., Joe Czerwinski, robertparker.com

"Jaboulet's 2017 Hermitage La Maison Bleue is flat-out sexy stuff, full-bodied, plush and generous without being overripe or unstructured. Licorice, cassis and Asian five-spice powder burst from the... glass in a complex whirl of scents and flavors.
