Southern Rhône Reds
In the Southern Rhône, 2020 was unlike 2018, for example, a vintage the wines of which differed greatly from those of its northern neighbour. By contrast, here a blanketing evenness in growing conditions that made for grenache-based reds with a similar degree of verve, energy, elegance and finesse. The cuvées of Clos du Caillou caught our palates particularly, which we’re very pleased to be offering in the 2020 campaign.

2020 le Clos du Caillou, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Les Quartz 6x75cl

"Deepest colour of the four Clos du Caillou cuvées (plenty of Syrah). The aromatics are again restrained but there’s an attractive pitch of fruit and a spicy note that grows with aeration. Rich... and sweet, the fruit really concentrated on the palate. Tannins firm but very fine and completely interwoven with the fruit. Another for ageing." 17 pts., www.jancisrobinson.com

"90% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre. Aged 18 months in foudres. Organic. Cask sample.
Reticent nose with just the semblance of dark and red fruit. Palate rich and intense, the fruit concentrated, the tannins powerful and long. Freshness on the finish. Clearly built for ageing." 17+ pts., www.jancisrobinson.com

"Huge intensity of burgundian red-berry fruit. Explodes on the palate. Layers of fruit with oh-so-fine tannins and amazing freshness and length on the finish. Real persistence aromatically. Powerful but elegant and restrained. Huge potential for ageing." 17.5 pts., James Lawther MW, www.jancisrobinson.com
