Burgundy 2021 EP
Once again, Burgundy en primeur is in the air. Which is why our feet are now on Burgundian soil and cellar floor as we make our way through this week’s itinerary of producer visits. Chablis, Nuits-St-Georges, Morey-St-Denis, Puligny, Meursault, Chassagne, St. Aubin, La Côte Chalonnaise… we’re covering some good ground whilst shortlisting those cuvées that truly excite the senses so that you’ll have first shot at this excitement and at our best en primeur prices.
And already, we’re tasting the heightened delicacy and freshness that marks the 2021 vintage. Here was a departure from the very warm, dry growing seasons and concentrated wines of Burgundy’s last three vintages, rendering ‘chiselled’, more classically styled, energetic wines showing wonderful precision and a pronounced minerality.
However, the price paid for this attractive, stylistic shift has been a dramatic reduction in volumes – particularly chardonnay – owing primarily to April frosts and cooler growing conditions in general. Although we expect this comparative decrease to be reflected throughout the 2021 campaign, we also expect this return to ‘classicism’ to offer a level of elegance and contrast well worthy of any collector’s serious consideration.
New releases coming soon!
