2018 Taaibosch, Crescendo 6x75cl

VM93
"Fast-forward a few years to 2017, and new owners, the Oddo family, proprietors of vineyards in Sancerre and Sicily, bought the estate and renamed it after a species of indigenous fynbos: Taaibosch.... The vines are now 21-years-old and organically farmed on Table Mountain sandstone soil over granite. Schalk-Willam Joubet, winemaker of 'Rupert & Rothschild' was appointed to oversee the resurrected wine, and the maiden 2018 was released earlier this year. It is a blend of 60% Cabernet Franc, 24% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured in a combination of 225-litre oak barrels (one-third new) plus 9,000-liter foudres and cement vats for 36 months. The nose expresses the Cabernet Franc with style, predominantly black fruit, intermingling with lavender, leather and crushed violets emanating from the Cabernet. The palate is very well balanced with quite a plush texture and a finish inspired by the Right Bank, though it is unmistakably from the Cape. It was difficult to resist another sip, an exemplar for the new-style of more restrained, terroir-driven Stellenbosch wines. Think what Figeac might taste like if it suddenly woke up and found itself in Stellenbosch. Be quick to grab the 2018 as it is sold out in many places, though the 2019 will be released imminently." 93 pts., Neal Martin, vinous.com

2020 Penfolds, Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, South Australia 6x75cl

RP94
"The Barossa has the ability to convey a sense of place, dirt and air in the glass. The trick is to not get in the way—a cooper does not terroir make. Despite not being the dominant region in this... blend (for specificity: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley), the Barossa makes a potent contribution. Here, in the 2020 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, the concentrated, dry and warm vintage is on show and provides a splay of earthy, dense fruit, stretched over a framework of savory tannin. Despite Penfolds's reputation for big tannins/big oak, the fruit here overpowers both and streams out over the long finish. The heart of Barossa is here. Very good. Will get better." 94 pts., Erin Larkin, robertparker.com

2018 Castellare di Castellina, Sodi San Niccolo, IGT 6x75cl

"Lovely abundance and expression on the nose, you get that perfect clarity of fruit - black fruits and blackcurrant laced with violets. Strong, round and rich - this is densely concentrated with... power and punch. Gorgeous texture - dry with firm firm tannins and a direct fruit profile - tension and linearity yet there's plushness and ripeness here too. It's round yet direct but also sweet and succulent. I love that immediately juicy perfumed hit you get on the tongue, such brightness and energy here, the sweet red cherry edge is so delicious. Supremely charming but also fun, such playfulness going on with the flavours and the textures." 96 pts., Georgina Hindle, www.decanter.com

2020 Aurelien Verdet, Morey-Saint-Denis 6x75cl

From his modest winery hidden off the beaten track in the little village of Arcenant in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, Aurélien Verdet crafts wines of astonishing purity and precision. A highly... talented young winemaker whose following is growing steadily every year, Aurélien is no exception to the adage that “Great wine is created in the vineyard”. Indeed, he lavishes great care and attention on his 5.5 ha of vines, which he farms organically to produce fruit of superb quality. The winemaking is then all about respecting that fruit to bring the terroir through, which he does with great aplomb. A rising star to watch! Wonderfully expressive with notes of violets and white pepper, Aurélien's is a characterful, full-bodied and powerful Morey Villages. The warm conditions yielded a lovely opulence to the fruit, and it shows the typical spicy element one can expect of this commune's wines, with added aromatic flourish courtesy of Aurélien's careful winemaking. A very fine villages cuvée.

2017 San Polino, Brunello di Montalcino, Helichrysum 6x75cl

"Unique aromas of dried flowers and sandalwood with ripe black cherries. Breath-taking. It’s full bodied yet rather agile and weightless with fine dusty tannins that float across the palate. Wonderfully done for this difficult vintage. Gorgeous and delectable now. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold." 96 pts., James Suckling (Nov, 2021)

2018 Domaines Barons de Rothschild & Nicolas Catena, Caro, Mendoza 6x75cl

VM95
Formed in 1999, Bodega Caro (precious in Spanish) represents a partnership between two of the wine world’s more elite profiles pursuing the supreme expression of their respective legacies and in... terms of Mendoza-based terroir. In more tangible terms, this means producing and blending the purest, most sublime Mendoza cabernet sauvignon and malbec their combined expertise and experience can accomplish. Authentic Argentinian identity with world-class Bordelais style. In maturation, the wine generally spends 18 months in oak, 80% of which new, and interestingly, blending proportions can vary dramatically, depending upon vintage conditions. In the case of the 2018 Caro, it is 76% malbec and 36% cabernet sauvignon, both coming from Paraje Atlamira in the Uco Valley.

2020 Aurelien Verdet, Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru, Aux Boudots 6x75cl

From his modest winery hidden off the beaten track in the little village of Arcenant in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, Aurélien Verdet crafts wines of astonishing purity and precision. A highly... talented young winemaker whose following is growing steadily every year, Aurélien is no exception to the adage that “Great wine is created in the vineyard”. The winemaking is then all about respecting that fruit to bring the terroir through, which he does with great aplomb. A rising star to watch! Over the past few years we have been waxing lyrical about those Nuits 1er Cru vineyards abutting to Vosne-Romanée (in this case, the famous Les Malconsorts) and the sublime balance of structured power, black-fruited intensity on one hand, and the velvety texture and lifted aromatics usually associated with Vosne. Aurélien's Les Boudots once again shows off this brilliant combination with its muscular tannins, brilliant energy and polished edges.
