2020 Domaine du Tunnel, Cornas 6x75cl
Cornas in a most refined and invigorating style. Serious polish and elegance here from an appellation more typically known for its rustic edge. Leafy, sweet & spicy black fruit on the nose with... earthy, mineral tones. On the palate, lovely interplay of sweet black olive and bitter tapenade flavours. Good grip; supremely precise, elegant, long finish. Quite superb. (Mr.Wheeler tasting note)

"This is really packed, offering dense waves of cassis, plum compote and blackberry reduction flavors that stay well-defined as they rumble through, with ample cast iron, sweet tapenade, lavender and... bay leaf accents. There's loads of grip on the back end, but it's well-integrated, so just let this unwind in the cellar. Best from 2024 through 2038." 95 pts., James Molesworth, winespectator.com

"66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot on gravel. A cru bourgeois.
Unnecessarily heavy bottle. Colour of black cherries with purple rim. Rich black fruit on the nose, a touch of cassis... leaf adding lift, surprisingly open. Sweet-fruited and with some oak sweetness on the palate too but with the savoury quality of the Médoc to balance the fruit. Finely textured and supple tannins and a lovely freshness from start to finish." 16 pts., Julia Harding MW, jancisrobinson.com

"Surprisingly pale – more Pinot-like than a Cabernet blend! A sweet-sour red-cherry fruit profile, with a notable herbal edge, perhaps reflecting the higher Sangiovese proportion than 2018. On... swirling, some cassis joins the party and there’s a background woody, cinnamon note. That sweet-sour sense comes through on the palate too, with a ripeness of red cherry and strawberry cut through with acidity. Pretty fine-grained, powdery tannins that are more refined than previous Le Difese vintages I have tasted. A touch of alcohol on the finish, but overall an enjoyable, perfumed red." 16 pts., Tim Jackson MW, jancisrobinson.com

From vines at the western edge of Meursault’s Premier cru vineyards, Vincent’s Charmes is aptly named. This pretty wine is already open and expressive with an enticing richness that complements its refined citrus and mineral backbone. A superb example of Chardonnay at its crafted best.

Another example of the new and refined direction in which Tunnel take Cornas. No longer the rusticity that had been typically associated with the appellation; rather, an enticingly elegant, polished... nose of black cherry and liquorice; an ultra silkiness on the palate, grippy, dense, dark black fruit and flavours of olive tapenade and corresponding sweet spice. Fresh, clean, powerful length. From 80-100-year-old vines.

From his modest winery hidden off the beaten track in the little village of Arcenant in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits, Aurélien Verdet crafts wines of astonishing purity and precision. A highly... talented young winemaker whose following is growing steadily every year, Aurélien is no exception to the adage that “Great wine is created in the vineyard”. Indeed, he lavishes great care and attention on his 5.5 ha of vines, which he farms organically to produce fruit of superb quality. The winemaking is then all about respecting that fruit to bring the terroir through, which he does with great aplomb. A rising star to watch!
Over the past few years we have been waxing lyrical about those Nuits 1er Cru vineyards abutting to Vosne-Romanée (in this case, the famous Les Malconsorts) and the sublime balance of structured power, black-fruited intensity on one hand, and the velvety texture and lifted aromatics usually associated with Vosne. Aurélien's Les Boudots once again shows off this brilliant combination with its muscular tannins, brilliant energy and polished edges.

Les Avaux is rarely found on labels, with the vineyard being best known for providing the main volume for the Hospices de Beaune's Cuvée Maurice Drouhin. This example is firmly structured, ambitious and built for long-term ageing.

"An intense, flinty nose with of fresh herbs and white florals. On the palate, expressive, perfectly ripe apricot and peach. Round, full-bodied and intense, it is rich and refined with a saline... finish that delivers great freshness. Superb with all types of fish - even better sauces - and with dishes such as blanquette de veau or simply as an aperitif with salmon toast."

Crystalline hued with a harmonious nose of fruit fragrance and intense minerality. More creamy minerality on the palate where juicy acidity and stone fruit combine for an incredible intensity of... sweet and bitter stone fruit flavours precisely wrought and with subtle lingering notes of white pepper. Enjoy with Wiener schnitzel, stews with giblets, creamy dishes, potato salad and ham in a crust or fried fish. (Mr.Wheeler Tasting Note)
